Maharashtra Ration Card 2026: Check List Online, Apply, Status Check & Download e-Card at mahafood

Maharashtra issues four types of ration cards: Saffron (AAY), Yellow (PHH), Orange (Non-Priority), and White (APL Farmer, exclusive to 14 suicide-prone districts). All services are split across two portals: mahafood.gov.in for information and forms, and rcms.mahafood.gov.in for applications, list checks, status tracking, and e-ration card downloads. To check the Maharashtra Ration Card list, go to rcms.mahafood.gov.in, click Ration Card, select DFSO wise Unit wise RC count, choose your district and Fair Price Shop, and view the beneficiary list. Apply online through the same RCMS portal or at a Maha e-Seva Kendra. Aadhaar seeding is mandatory. The e-ration card is legally valid at all Fair Price Shops. The PDS helpline is 1967.

Every year, thousands of Maharashtra residents spend hours going to the wrong portal, submitting incomplete documents, or not knowing why their ration card application was rejected. According to Maharashtra Food Department RCMS data published by the department, the state had 2,24,52,050 ration cards across categories. And if anything, the confusion around the two separate portals ( mahafood.gov.in and rcms.mahafood.gov.in) makes the process harder than it should be for genuine applicants.

This guide cuts through that confusion. Whether you need to check the Maharashtra Ration Card list 2026, track your application status, download your e-ration card, or understand which of the four card types applies to your family, every step is here, verified from the official RCMS and MahaFood portals.

What Is Maharashtra Ration Card and How Does the PDS Work?

The Maharashtra ration card is an official document issued by the state's Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department, commonly called MahaFood. It entitles eligible families to subsidised food grains and other essential commodities through the Public Distribution System (PDS), governed nationally by the National Food Security Act (NFSA) of 2013.

Unlike many states, Maharashtra runs the PDS through two distinct portals. The mahafood.gov.in website is the department's information portal, where you access scheme details, download forms, and file grievances. The actual ration card work — including new applications, status checks, beneficiary list searches, and e-card downloads — all happens at rcms.mahafood.gov.in, the Ration Card Management System. Most of the portal confusion people experience stems from this split, so understanding it from the start saves considerable time.

The state's PDS network is one of the largest in India, covering over 52,000 Fair Price Shops (FPS) across all 36 districts, serving approximately 2.24 crore ration card families.

Maharashtra Ration Card Latest Updates — June 2026

e-Ration Card Now Issued for All Categories — Paper Card Being Phased Out
Through a Government Resolution dated 16 May 2023, Maharashtra mandated e-ration cards for all PDS categories: AAY (saffron), PHH (yellow), APL Farmer (white), and Non-Priority Household (orange). The physical ration card is being progressively phased out. If you have not yet received or downloaded your e-ration card, you can do so now through rcms.mahafood.gov.in after logging in. The e-ration card is legally valid at all Fair Price Shops across Maharashtra and, under ONORC, at FPS shops across India.

Aadhaar Seeding Mandatory — Current Status
Aadhaar seeding is no longer optional in Maharashtra. Every family member listed on the ration card must have their Aadhaar number linked to the card in the RCMS database. Without it, the electronic Point-of-Sale (ePoS) machine at the Fair Price Shop will not authenticate the transaction and you will not receive your monthly entitlement. If your seeding is incomplete, visit the nearest rationing office or Maha e-Seva Kendra with Aadhaar copies of all members and biometric verification of the head of family.

One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) — How It Works in Maharashtra
Maharashtra is fully integrated with the One Nation One Ration Card scheme under the Integrated Management of Public Distribution System (IM-PDS). This means a yellow or saffron card holder from Maharashtra can purchase their entitled ration at any FPS in any other participating state, and vice versa. This is particularly relevant for migrant workers from Maharashtra. To use it, your Aadhaar must be seeded and you need to carry your Aadhaar card for biometric authentication at the FPS in the other state. Check portability transaction history at impds.nic.in.

Maharashtra Ration Card List 2026: How to Check Your Name Online

The Maharashtra Ration Card list is the beneficiary database maintained on the RCMS portal. If your name appears here, your card is active. If it does not appear after you have applied, it means your application is still under review or has not yet been approved.

Step-by-Step List Check on rcms.mahafood.gov.in

Step 1: Go to rcms.mahafood.gov.in on your phone or computer.

Step 2: On the homepage, click on 'Ration Card' in the top navigation menu.

Step 3: Select 'DFSO wise Unit wise RC count' from the dropdown.

Step 4: Enter the captcha code displayed and click 'Verify'.

Step 5: Select the district (DFSO), date, and type of ration card from the dropdown menus.

Step 6: Click 'View Report'. A list of Fair Price Shops will appear.

Step 7: Click on your FPS shop name. The list of all registered beneficiaries under that shop will appear on screen.

Note: The list is organised by Fair Price Shop, not by individual name. If you do not know which FPS you are assigned to, check your ration card or log in to your RCMS account and check under 'Know Your Ration Card'.

How to Search District-Wise and Taluka-Wise
When you select the district and DFSO in step 4, the portal lets you narrow down by taluka and FPS. For a taluka-level search, select the relevant supply circle after choosing the district. Maharashtra has 36 districts and over 358 talukas covered in the RCMS database, so the drill-down helps significantly in dense urban areas like Pune, Mumbai, and Nagpur.

Name Not in List Despite Applying — Reasons and Next Steps
If you applied but your name is missing from the Maharashtra Ration Card list, the most common reasons are: application is still pending verification, documents were found incomplete, Aadhaar seeding has failed due to a name mismatch, or a duplicate card was flagged. Log in to your RCMS account, go to the 'Application Request' tab, and click 'View Details' to see the exact status and any remarks. If the status shows 'Under Verification' for more than 45 days without movement, visit the district supply office directly with all original documents.

Maharashtra Ration Card Types 2026 — Which One Applies to You?

Maharashtra has four types of ration cards in use, which is more than most states. Understanding which category you fall into before applying matters, because applying in the wrong category is one of the most common reasons for rejection.

Card Colour

Category

Who It Covers

Monthly Grain Entitlement

Saffron (Orange-Yellow)

Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)

Poorest of the poor — no fixed income, destitute families

35 kg per family

Rs 2/kg wheat, Rs 3/kg rice

Yellow

Priority Household (PHH)

NFSA families: income below Rs 44,000 (rural) / Rs 59,000 (urban) p.a.

5 kg per person per month

Rs 2/kg wheat, Rs 3/kg rice

Orange

Non-Priority Household (NPH)

Market-linked subsidised rates

APL Farmer Card (commonly referred to as White Card in public usage)

APL Farmer — State Scheme

Farmers in 14 suicide-prone districts (Aurangabad & Amravati divisions + Wardha)

DBT of Rs 170/month instead of grains (from Jan 2023)

Direct Benefit Transfer

Note: From January 2023, APL Farmer (white) card holders in the 14 notified districts receive a Direct Benefit Transfer of Rs 170 per beneficiary per month instead of food grains, as per Government Resolution dated 28.02.2023. Although NFSA Schedule-I rates remain Rs 2/kg for wheat and Rs 3/kg for rice, the Central Government is currently providing food grains free of cost to eligible AAY and PHH beneficiaries under the ongoing free foodgrain programme extended from January 2024 for five years.

Saffron Card — Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)
This is the highest-priority card, intended for families identified as the poorest of the poor: daily labourers with no fixed income, destitute widows and senior citizens without support, and primitive tribal groups. Eligibility is determined by local authorities in coordination with the supply department, not purely by income declaration. AAY families get 35 kg of food grain per family per month at the most subsidised rates in the country.

Yellow Card — Priority Household (PHH) Under NFSA
The yellow PHH card covers families who meet the state's income criteria under the NFSA. In rural areas, the annual income ceiling is Rs 44,000 per family, and in urban areas it is Rs 59,000. PHH card holders are entitled to 5 kg of grain per person per month. This is the most common card type in Maharashtra, according to Maharashtra Food Department RCMS statistics published in January 2024, the state had 1,36,05,051 PHH ration cards.

Orange Card — Non-Priority Household (NPH)
The orange card covers families above the PHH income limit but who do not meet the exclusion criteria for higher-income groups. These families receive grain at government-fixed rates above the NFSA subsidised rates but still below open market prices. If your family owns a four-wheeler, has a registered GST taxpayer, or has a residential landline telephone, you fall under the exclusion criteria and are not eligible for any ration card.

White APL Farmer Card — Exclusive to 14 Suicide-Prone Districts
This is Maharashtra's most distinctive category, and no other state in India has an equivalent. The APL Farmer card, issued in white, was created specifically to provide food security to farmers in districts with historically high farmer suicide rates. The 14 districts covered include all districts in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) and Amravati divisions, plus Wardha district in the Nagpur division.
Since January 2023, the benefit has been restructured from food grain distribution to a Direct Benefit Transfer of Rs 170 per beneficiary per month, deposited directly into the Aadhaar-linked bank account. The rationale: cash transfer allows farmers to decide what their family needs most urgently. If you are a farmer in one of these 14 districts, you may be eligible regardless of whether you qualify for a PHH card.

Maharashtra Ration Card Eligibility Criteria 2026

The eligibility rules in Maharashtra are more layered than the basic NFSA criteria. Here is a consolidated breakdown before you apply.

How to Apply for Maharashtra Ration Card Online 2026

The online application process is handled through the RCMS portal at rcms.mahafood.gov.in. Keep your Aadhaar-linked mobile number handy before starting, as an OTP will be sent to it during registration and application.

Step-by-Step Application on RCMS Portal

  • Go to

  • rcms.mahafood.gov.in and click on 'Sign In / Register'.

  • Select 'Public Login' and then click 'New User! Sign Up Here' to create your account.

  • Register using your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and set a password.

  • After registration, log in using your credentials.

  • From the left-hand dashboard menu, select 'Apply / Edit Ration Card Application'.

  • Choose 'I want to apply for a new Ration Card' and select the appropriate card category.

  • Fill in all required details: head of family information, all family members' details, income details, and address.

  • Upload scanned copies of all required documents.

  • Click 'Save', review all details, then click 'Submit Ration Card for Verification and Approval'.

  • Note the acknowledgement number generated. Use this to track your application status.

Note: After submission, a field verification by a supply inspector typically takes place within 30-45 days. Physical presence at home may be required for verification.

Offline Application — Ration Office and Maha e-Seva Kendra
If you prefer not to apply online, visit your nearest Maha e-Seva Kendra or the local supply / rationing office. Collect the printed application form, fill in all details, attach self-attested copies of required documents, and submit. The Maha e-Seva Kendra operator can also assist with uploading your application directly on the RCMS portal for a nominal service fee.

How Long Does It Take to Get Approved?
The government's prescribed timeline is 30 to 45 working days from the date of submission. In practice, approvals in urban supply offices can take 60-90 days during high-volume periods. District-level rural offices tend to be faster. If there is no status change for more than 60 days and your status shows 'Under Verification', escalate directly at the district supply office with your acknowledgement number.
Managing welfare documents is part of securing your family's financial foundation. If you are also looking at health coverage linked to your ration card, Maharashtra's Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) operates alongside Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY in Maharashtra. Eligible families may receive significantly higher cashless treatment coverage depending on the applicable scheme category and empanelled treatment package. Talk to an SMC Insurance advisor to understand how MJPJAY integrates with private health insurance for complete coverage.

Two Portals Explained - mahafood.gov.in vs rcms.mahafood.gov.in

This is the question that generates the most search traffic and the most confusion, and it is worth being explicit. The two portals look similar in name but serve completely different purposes. mahafood.gov.in is the department's public information website. You use it to read about schemes, download blank application forms, file grievances, and access APL Farmer DBT information. You cannot check your ration card status or download your e-card from here.
rcms.mahafood.gov.in is the operational portal. Everything transactional happens here: new applications, member additions, status tracking, beneficiary list searches, e-ration card downloads, and Aadhaar seeding status. If someone tells you to 'go to mahafood.gov.in to check your status', they are sending you to the wrong portal.

How to Download Maharashtra e-Ration Card 2026

The e-ration card is now the primary format for all ration card categories in Maharashtra. Once your card is approved, it can be downloaded directly from the RCMS portal.

Step-by-Step e-Ration Card Download

  • Go to rcms.mahafood.gov.in and log in (Public Login > Registered User).

  • From the left-hand dashboard menu, select 'Download Your Ration Card'.

  • An OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Enter the OTP and click 'Verify OTP'.

  • Your e-ration card will appear on screen. Click 'Download' to save it as a PDF.

  • Print it out or save it on your phone. Both formats are accepted at Fair Price Shops.

Is the e-Ration Card Legally Valid at Fair Price Shops?
Yes, it is fully valid. Maharashtra's Government Resolution of May 2023 established the e-ration card as the standard document under the PDS. Fair Price Shop operators use ePoS machines for Aadhaar biometric authentication, so what matters is your Aadhaar seeding, not the physical or digital version of the card. If an FPS operator refuses a valid e-ration card without a legitimate operational reason, beneficiaries should report the matter through the grievance mechanism or helpline.

Aadhaar Seeding for Maharashtra Ration Card — Why It Is Mandatory

Aadhaar seeding is the mechanism that allows the ePoS machine at your Fair Price Shop to authenticate your identity and release your monthly entitlement. Incomplete seeding can disrupt access to monthly entitlements and may require manual resolution through the local supply office.

How to Complete Aadhaar eKYC for Ration Card
If your Aadhaar seeding is incomplete or has failed, here is how to complete it:

  • Visit the nearest rationing office or Maha e-Seva Kendra.

  • Carry Aadhaar cards (original) of all family members listed on the ration card.

  • The head of the family must provide biometric verification (fingerprint or iris scan).

  • The operator will link each member's Aadhaar to the ration card in the RCMS database.

  • Seeding confirmation is typically reflected in the system within 2–3 working days.

How to Check Aadhaar Seeding Status
Go to nfsa.gov.in and navigate to the 'Aadhaar Seeding' section. Select Maharashtra from the state dropdown, enter your ration card number or Aadhaar number, and view the seeding status for each family member. Alternatively, call the PDS toll-free helpline 1967 and ask for Aadhaar seeding status against your ration card number.

Maharashtra e-KYC Drive for NFSA Beneficiaries

Maharashtra continues to conduct Aadhaar e-KYC and beneficiary verification drives to improve the accuracy of the Public Distribution System database. Beneficiaries may periodically be asked to complete biometric verification or update household information. Failure to respond to repeated verification requests can lead to temporary suspension or review of ration card records until the details are confirmed. Cardholders should ensure that Aadhaar details, mobile numbers, and household member information remain updated in the RCMS system.

How to Make Changes to Maharashtra Ration Card

Life events - a birth, a death, a marriage, a migration - require updating the ration card. Maharashtra handles all modifications through the RCMS portal under the 'Ration Card Modification' option. For certain changes, you may need to visit a supply office or Maha e-Seva Kendra.

How to Add a New Family Member?
Log in to the RCMS portal, select 'Ration Card Modification', and choose 'Add Member'. Fill in the new member's details, upload the relevant document (birth certificate for a newborn, marriage certificate if it is a spouse joining the household), and submit. An OTP verification step is included. After submission, the addition is subject to field verification before being approved.

How to Delete a Member (Marriage, Death, Migration)?
For removal due to marriage, the member typically needs to get a new ration card at the husband's address (or her own address if she is the head of the household in her own right). For death, submit the death certificate. For migration out of state, produce proof of new state residency. All these are submitted through the RCMS portal under 'Ration Card Modification' or at a supply office.

Maharashtra Ration Card Problem-Specific Fix Guide

These are the most common ration card problems Maharashtra residents face and how to resolve them. This section is absent from most competitor guides, which typically stop at listing forms.

  • Name Removed From Ration Card List Without Notice
This usually happens when a de-duplication drive removes a name flagged as a duplicate, when Aadhaar seeding fails and the record becomes inactive, or when a periodic survey update flags your household as ineligible. First check your status using 'Know Your Ration Card' on the RCMS portal. If removed, visit the district supply office with your original documents and Aadhaar. The district supply officer has authority to restore names removed in error within the appeal window, which is typically 30 days from the date of removal notice.

  • Fair Price Shop Denying Ration Despite Valid Card
An FPS operator can legally deny ration only if: the ePoS biometric authentication fails, the monthly quota for that commodity is exhausted, or the card has been suspended pending verification. If none of these apply and the refusal is arbitrary, call 1967 immediately and register a complaint with your FPS shop code and ration card number. You can also file a written complaint at the supply inspector's office. Repeated refusals are treated as violations of the NFSA distribution mandate.

  • Ration Card Application Rejected — Common Reasons and Appeal
The most frequent rejection reasons are: duplicate cards detected against the same household members, income or landholding exceeding eligibility limits, Aadhaar mismatch between the application and the UIDAI database, or documents found incomplete. The rejection reason is displayed in your RCMS account. You can file an appeal at the district supply office within 30 days of rejection. Bring all original documents and the rejection notice. If the district office does not act within 30 days of appeal, escalate to the State Consumer Grievance Redressal Commission through mahafood.gov.in.

  • Duplicate Ration Card Flagged
A duplicate flag is triggered when the system detects two ration cards with overlapping Aadhaar data or the same household address. Visit the supply office, produce your original Aadhaar for all members, and request a manual de-duplication review. The supply inspector will verify which card is valid and cancel the other. This process can take 30–60 days but is worth pursuing, as a duplicate flag will block your benefits until resolved.

  • Maharashtra Ration Card Helpline, Grievance and Portal Directory

A lot of the frustration with the Maharashtra ration card process comes from not knowing which number to call or which URL to use. Here is everything in one place.

    PDS Toll-Free Helpline 1967
The national PDS helpline 1967 is operational in Maharashtra for ration card queries, FPS-related complaints, and Aadhaar seeding issues. There is also a state-level toll-free number: 1800224950. Both are free to call from mobile and landline. When calling, keep your ration card number or RCMS acknowledgement number ready.

How to File an Online Grievance on mahafood.gov.in — Step by Step

    • Go to mahafood.gov.in and click on 'Grievance Redressal' in the top menu.

    • Select 'Submit Grievance' and fill in your personal details, ration card number, and a description of the issue.

    • Upload supporting documents if available.

    • Submit and note the complaint ID generated. Use this to track status.

Maharashtra Ration Card Helpline, Grievance and Portal Directory

Your ration card does more than get you subsidised grain. In Maharashtra, it also acts as the key eligibility document for multiple state and central welfare schemes.

    • Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY):, Yellow, orange, saffron, and Annapurna card holders are eligible for cashless hospitalisation coverage up to Rs 1.5 lakh per family per year at over 4,000 empanelled hospitals across Maharashtra.

    • Ayushman Bharat (AB-PMJAY): Integrated with MJPJAY in Maharashtra, providing additional coverage up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year for eligible categories.

    • Annapurna Yojana: Senior citizens aged 65 and above who are not covered under the National Old Age Pension Scheme get 10 kg of food grain free every month.

    • Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY): Central scheme providing free additional grain during emergency periods, delivered through ration card holders.

For more on government health schemes linked to ration cards, read SMC Insurance's guide to Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana at smcinsurance.com.

    Summing Up

Getting a ration card in Maharashtra is not complicated once you know where to go. The RCMS portal at rcms.mahafood.gov.in handles everything transactional, and mahafood.gov.in is the place for information and grievances. Keep these two portals straight and you will save yourself significant back-and-forth.

Two things are non-negotiable before you can actually use the card: Aadhaar seeding for every family member and an updated mobile number registered with Aadhaar. Without these, the ePoS machine at the Fair Price Shop simply will not authenticate you, however valid your card may be on paper.
If your application was rejected or your name disappeared from the Maharashtra Ration Card list, do not assume the decision is final. The appeal mechanism at the district supply office works, but it requires you to act within 30 days of the rejection notice. If you are hitting an administrative wall, the toll-free number 1967 is the fastest escalation route.

    FAQs

Maharashtra has four types: Saffron (AAY) for the poorest destitute families with no fixed income; Yellow (PHH) for families with annual income below Rs 44,000 in rural areas or Rs 59,000 in urban areas; Orange (NPH) for above-poverty-line families who do not meet the exclusion criteria; and APL Farmer Card (commonly referred to as White Card in public usage) for farmers specifically in 14 suicide-prone districts in the Aurangabad and Amravati divisions plus Wardha. Your category depends on income, landholding, and geography. The RCMS portal will guide you to the right category based on the details you enter during application.

Go to rcms.mahafood.gov.in, click on 'Ration Card', select 'DFSO wise Unit wise RC count', enter the captcha, and then choose your district, DFSO, date, and card type. Click 'View Report', then click on your Fair Price Shop name to see the Maharashtra Ration Card list for that shop. If your name appears, your card is active. If not, log in to your RCMS account to check your application status.

The APL Farmer card is a state-specific category unique to Maharashtra. It was created to provide food security to farming families in 14 districts with historically high farmer suicide rates, covering all districts in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) and Amravati divisions, along with Wardha in the Nagpur division. From January 2023, instead of grain distribution, eligible white card holders receive a Direct Benefit Transfer of Rs 170 per beneficiary per month directly in their Aadhaar-linked bank account, as per a Government Resolution dated 28 February 2023.

Yes, the full application process is available online at rcms.mahafood.gov.in. Register as a new user, log in, fill in the ration card application form, upload all required documents, and submit. However, after online submission, a field verification visit by a supply inspector is mandatory before approval is granted. The inspector may visit your residence to verify the information provided. You cannot skip this step, but you do not need to visit an office to initiate the application.

Yes, the e-ration card is the primary accepted format at all Fair Price Shops in Maharashtra since the Government Resolution of May 2023. FPS operators use ePoS (electronic Point-of-Sale) machines with Aadhaar biometric authentication. What the operator actually scans is your Aadhaar fingerprint, not the card itself. That said, carry a printout or your phone with the e-card PDF as backup identification. If an FPS refuses to accept your e-ration card without a valid technical reason, report it in 1967 immediately.

mahafood.gov.in is the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department's public information website. Use it to read about PDS schemes, download application forms, access APL Farmer DBT details, and submit grievances. rcms.mahafood.gov.in is the Ration Card Management System portal, the operational portal where all transactions happen: new applications, member additions or deletions, status tracking, beneficiary list searches, and e-ration card downloads. Always use rcms.mahafood.gov.in for anything that requires doing rather than reading.

Go to nfsa.gov.in and look for the Aadhaar seeding status check option under the Maharashtra state. Enter your ration card number or Aadhaar number to see which family members have been seeded and which have not. Alternatively, call 1967 and ask for the seeding status against your ration card number. If any member is not seeded, visit the nearest rationing office or Maha e-Seva Kendra with Aadhaar cards and biometric verification of the family head to complete the process.

Log in to the RCMS portal at rcms.mahafood.gov.in, go to 'Ration Card Modification', and select 'Add Member'. Enter the child's details and upload the birth certificate. Submit the request and note the acknowledgement number. A field verification may follow before the addition is approved. The child's Aadhaar (once obtained) will need to be seeded separately. If you do not have the Aadhaar yet, the addition can still be initiated with the birth certificate, but seeding will be required before the child can receive their entitlement at the FPS.

Yes, under the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme, your Maharashtra ration card can be used to purchase your entitled grain at any FPS across all participating states in India. You need to carry your Aadhaar card for biometric authentication at the FPS in the other state. The transaction is recorded on the IM-PDS portal, and your family's remaining monthly entitlement in Maharashtra is adjusted accordingly. Check ONORC transaction history and participating state FPS locations at impds.nic.in or nfsa.gov.in.

Yes, Maharashtra continues to undertake Aadhaar-based e-KYC and beneficiary verification drives for NFSA beneficiaries. Eligible cardholders should complete any verification requested by their local rationing office or Fair Price Shop to avoid service disruptions.

Eligible AAY and PHH beneficiaries continue to receive food grains free of cost under the Central Government's ongoing free foodgrain programme implemented through the National Food Security Act framework.
