The Kia EV9 is Kia's largest and most expensive electric SUV in India — a fully imported, fully-loaded GT-Line 6-seater powered by a massive 99.8kWh battery with a claimed ARAI range of up to 561km. Positioned to rival the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and BMW iX, the EV9 carries a battery and drivetrain that account for the bulk of its Rs. 1.30 Crore value, making the right insurance both a legal requirement and essential financial protection. SMC Insurance helps you compare 30+ insurers, choose the right plan — including EV-specific battery cover — for your EV9 and get an instant policy in minutes, with zero paperwork.
Quick Links — Insurance Types:
Third-Party Insurance (Mandatory)
Third-party car insurance is the
minimum legal requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, for every Kia EV9 on Indian roads. It covers damage, injury, or death caused to a third
party in an accident involving your car. It does not cover damage to your own vehicle — including the 99.8kWh battery pack, which represents a very
large share of the EV9's value. Third-party-only cover leaves a Rs. 1.30 Crore EV9 completely unprotected against accidents, theft, fire or battery
damage.
Comprehensive Insurance (Strongly Recommended)
Comprehensive car
insurance covers third-party liability and your own vehicle damage, and is essential for all Kia EV9 owners. It protects against accidents, theft,
fire, floods and other perils — including damage to the battery, motor and charging components when the right add-ons are selected. Given that the
Kia EV9 costs upwards of Rs. 1.30 Crore ex-showroom, comprehensive coverage with Zero Dep and Battery Protection is non-negotiable to avoid a repair
or replacement bill running into several lakhs.
Standalone Own Damage (OD) Policy
If you already hold a valid
third-party policy from another insurer, you can purchase a Standalone Own Damage policy separately to cover repair costs for your Kia EV9. Standalone
OD policies became available following IRDAI regulatory changes, giving car owners the flexibility to choose their own-damage insurer independently
of their TP policy.
The Kia EV9 is currently sold in India in a single fully-loaded GT-Line 6-seater variant, imported as a CBU — there is no petrol/diesel or trim-level choice. The table below gives an indicative premium for the EV9 as a brand-new car registered in Zone A cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad:
|
Variant |
Ex-Showroom Price (Approx.) |
IDV (Approx.) |
Zero Dep Add-on |
Comprehensive Premium (Bundled) |
Kia EV9 GT-Line AWD (99.8 kWh) |
Rs. 1.30 Crore |
Rs. 1.235 Crore |
Rs. 32,000 approx. |
Rs. 3,60,000 onwards |
Note: Premiums are indicative estimates for a brand-new car registered at Coimbatore (TN-38) RTO. Actual premiums vary by registration year, IDV chosen, city and insurer, and are typically significantly higher for a fully-imported luxury EV like the EV9 due to very costly parts, long import lead times, and high battery replacement risk. Use the quote tool above for your exact price.
Third-party (TP) premiums for private cars are regulated and notified by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) in consultation with IRDAI. For electric vehicles, the TP premium is based on the electric motor's power output in kilowatts (kW) — not engine cc — and carries a built-in discount versus the equivalent petrol/diesel slab. The rates applicable for the Kia EV9 are:
Annual Third-Party Premium (Private Electric Cars)
|
Motor Power Output |
Annual TP Premium |
Not exceeding 30 kW |
Rs. 1,780 |
30 kW to 65 kW |
Rs. 2,904 |
Exceeding 65 kW |
Rs. 6,712 |
Note: The Kia EV9's dual-motor AWD setup produces a combined output of 384 PS (approx. 282.6 kW), which falls in the "exceeding 65 kW" slab, making its TP premium Rs. 6,712/year — the same flat rate that applies to every EV above 65 kW, regardless of how far past the threshold the motor output sits. This is still lower than what an equivalent-power petrol/diesel SUV above 1500cc would attract (Rs. 7,897/year).
Note: A Third-Party Premium Revision May Be Coming in FY 2026–27 MoRTH and IRDAI are currently discussing a proposal to raise third-party premiums by 10–25% across vehicle segments, based on claims experience — the first such revision in nearly six years. The exact new rates have not yet been officially notified. For EVs specifically, it isn't yet clear whether the current built-in TP discount (which keeps EV rates below the equivalent petrol/diesel slab) will be preserved once the revision lands. Until a fresh notification is issued, the rates in the table above remain in force.

The Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the maximum amount your insurer will pay in case of total loss or theft of your Kia EV9. IDV is calculated based on the ex-showroom price minus depreciation, as per IRDAI-prescribed depreciation rates. For an EV, the IDV effectively also reflects the battery pack's value, since the battery cannot be separated from the vehicle's insured value:
|
Car Age |
Standard Depreciation |
IDV Retained |
Less than 6 months |
5% |
95% |

50% |
50% |
For cars older than 5 years, IDV is agreed upon mutually between the insurer and
the policyholder. Higher IDV means better coverage but slightly higher premium.
Always avoid choosing the lowest IDV to reduce premium —
on a Rs. 1.30 Crore battery-heavy EV like the EV9, under-insuring can leave an out-of-pocket gap running into tens of lakhs in case of total
loss.
IRDAI classifies Indian cities into Zone A and Zone B for own-damage (OD) pricing. Zone A cities carry slightly higher premiums due to greater traffic density, accident frequency and theft rates.
Zone A Cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad
Zone B Cities: All other cities and towns in India
Estimated Premium for a 3-Year-Old Kia EV9 GT-Line AWD:
|
Zone |
Estimated Comprehensive Premium |
Zone A (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai) |
Rs. 1,55,000 – Rs. 1,90,000 |
Zone B (e.g., Coimbatore, Madurai) |
Rs. 1,30,000 – Rs. 1,60,000 |
Note: Premiums vary further based on insurer, IDV, NCB, battery condition and add-ons selected.
If you haven't made any claim during a policy year, you earn a No Claim Bonus (NCB) — a discount applied to the own-damage (OD) portion of your premium at renewal. Given how high OD premiums run on a Rs. 1.30 Crore flagship EV like the Kia EV9, NCB delivers a very substantial rupee saving for careful owners — potentially over a lakh a year at 50% NCB.

Key NCB Facts:
NCB belongs to the owner, not the car — it transfers when you change insurers, and even when you upgrade to another Kia model.
NCB is lost if you make an own-damage claim during the policy year.
You can protect your accumulated NCB with an NCB Protect add-on — especially useful given the high cost of a single battery-related claim on a flagship EV like the EV9.
Standard comprehensive insurance can be enhanced with optional add-on covers. Given the EV9's very high battery-heavy value and imported parts, the following are especially important for Kia EV9 owners:
Zero depreciation cover
At the time of a claim, insurers normally deduct depreciation from
parts such as plastic, rubber, glass, metal — and by default, the battery. Zero Dep eliminates most of this deduction, so you receive a far
higher repair/replacement payout. This is arguably the single most important add-on for the Kia EV9, since even a minor battery casing repair
on a 99.8kWh pack can otherwise cost several lakhs out of pocket.
Battery protection cover
A number of insurers now offer a dedicated Battery Protection add-on for
EVs, covering damage to the battery pack and battery management system from water ingress, short-circuit, or fire — risks that standard
comprehensive policies may limit or exclude by default given the battery's typical 50% depreciation slab. Strongly recommended for the EV9,
whose 99.8kWh battery sits low in the floor and is exposed to road debris and waterlogging.
Return to invoice (RTI) cover
In case of total loss (theft or beyond-economical-repair damage), RTI
pays you the original invoice value of your Kia EV9 — not just the depreciated IDV. Given the EV9's very high import cost and long CBU
replacement lead times, RTI is strongly recommended for the first 2–3 years of ownership.
Roadside assistance (RSA) with EV support
RSA for EVs typically includes flatbed towing to the nearest charging
point or service centre if your EV9 runs out of charge or breaks down — standard petrol/diesel RSA (fuel delivery) doesn't apply the same way
to an EV, and the EV9's size means it needs a heavy-duty flatbed. Available from most insurers at a modest additional premium.
Key and lock replacement cover
Key and lock replacement cover provides the cost of replacing lost or
damaged smart keys — a practical add-on given the EV9's keyless, shift-by-wire system.
Tyre protection cover
Covers repair or replacement of damaged tyres due to accidental damage, bulging,
or burst on the EV9's large 20-inch alloy wheels — expenses not covered under standard policies.
Consumables & charging accessory cover
Covers the cost of consumables and, on select insurer policies, the
portable charging cable and connector supplied with the car — items usually excluded from standard claims.
NCB Protect
Allows you to make one own-damage claim in a policy year without
losing your accumulated NCB. Given the very high cost of an EV9 OD premium, this is highly recommended for EV9 owners.

Excellent Service
I have purchased a new vehicle and was looking for the car insurance with comprehensive coverage. SMC Website was quick to assist me with the premium amount and the payment process was easy. Happy with their services.
Smooth Process
I purchased my car insurance from SMC, and it has truly been worth it. When my car caused third-party damage, I simply shared the photos and videos with them. Thanks to Sachin, the customer executive, my insurer settled the claim within just a week. Really satisfied with the service!
Excellent Support
This is the best insurance company as they have assisted me well while buying the car insurance policy. Kudos to SMC!
Yes, under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every car on public roads in India — including electric vehicles — must carry at least a valid third-party liability insurance policy. Driving your Kia EV9 without insurance carries a fine of up to Rs. 2,000 for the first offence and Rs. 4,000 for subsequent offences, along with possible vehicle impoundment. Given the EV9's Rs. 1.30 Crore value, we strongly recommend comprehensive cover over the bare legal minimum.
The minimum is a third-party (TP) insurance policy. For new Kia EV9 cars, a 3-year bundled TP policy is mandatory at the time of purchase. While TP is the legal minimum, it leaves your EV9 — and its expensive 99.8kWh battery pack — unprotected against accidents, theft, fire and water damage. Comprehensive insurance with battery-specific add-ons is strongly recommended for adequate financial protection on a flagship EV of this value.
IDV (Insured Declared Value) is the ex-showroom price of your Kia EV9 minus depreciation as per IRDAI norms — the same formula used for petrol/diesel cars. There's no separate IDV line for the battery; it's built into the overall vehicle value. For example, an EV9 with an ex-showroom price of around Rs. 1.30 Crore that is 2 years old would have an IDV of approximately Rs. 1.04 Crore (after 20% depreciation).
Standard comprehensive insurance covers accidental battery damage, but insurers typically apply steep depreciation (often 50%) on battery replacement claims by default, similar to how a conventional car battery is treated. On a 99.8kWh pack, that deduction alone can run into several lakhs. To get closer to full replacement value, you need a Zero Depreciation add-on and, where available, a dedicated Battery Protection cover — both strongly recommended for the EV9.
Yes, damage caused by floods, waterlogging, or cyclones is generally covered under comprehensive car insurance. However, EV battery packs sit low in the floor and are more exposed to waterlogged roads than a conventional engine bay. Kia EV9 owners in flood-prone cities like Chennai, Mumbai, or Bengaluru should strongly consider a Battery Protection add-on alongside Zero Dep for fuller coverage.
If your policy lapses by more than 90 days, the insurer will require a pre-acceptance inspection of your Kia EV9 before renewing. You also lose your accumulated NCB — a very meaningful loss given how high OD premiums run on a Rs. 1.30 Crore EV like the EV9. For lapses under 90 days, most insurers renew without inspection. Always renew before the expiry date to avoid inspection hassle, NCB loss, and the legal risk of driving uninsured.
The third-party premium is actually lower — IRDAI's kW-based EV slab gives the EV9 a flat TP premium of Rs. 6,712/year versus Rs. 7,897/year for an equivalent large-capacity petrol/diesel SUV. However, the own-damage premium tends to be meaningfully higher, since the 99.8kWh battery pack is very expensive to replace and CBU-imported parts have long lead times. The net comprehensive premium usually ends up higher for an EV of comparable price.
Every car insurance policy in India mandatorily includes a Compulsory Personal Accident (CPA) cover of Rs. 15 lakh for the owner-driver. This covers accidental death or permanent disability of the policyholder while driving the Kia EV9. Given the EV9's 6-seater captain-chair layout, additional PA cover for co-passengers is worth adding as an optional rider. The CPA premium is Rs. 750/year and is included in your bundled policy.
