The Kia Seltos is India's highest-selling compact SUV and the car that established Kia's dominance in the Indian market. Kia launched an all-new, second-generation Seltos on January 2, 2026 (bigger, more feature-rich and with revised variant names and pricing), making it one of the most widely insured vehicles in its segment across India. Whether you own the base HTE Petrol MT or the top-spec X-Line (A) with the 7-speed DCT, having the right car insurance is both a legal requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and essential financial protection. SMC Insurance helps you compare 30+ insurers, choose the right plan for your Seltos and get an instant policy in minutes, with zero paperwork.
Quick Links — Insurance Types:
There are three broad types of motor insurance available in India, and the right one for your Seltos depends on how much financial exposure you are comfortable with.
Third-Party Insurance (Mandatory)
Third-party car
insurance is the minimum legal requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, for every Kia Seltos on Indian roads.
It covers damage, injury, or death caused to a third party in an accident involving your car, but it does not cover
damage to your own vehicle. While it carries the lowest premium, it leaves your Seltos
(even the entry-level HTE Petrol MT) completely unprotected against accidents, theft, or natural calamities.
Comprehensive Insurance (Recommended)
Comprehensive car insurance covers third-party liability and your own vehicle damage,
making it the strongly recommended choice for all Kia Seltos owners. It protects
against accidents, theft, fire, floods, earthquakes and other perils. Given that even
Kia's most affordable Seltos variant costs upwards of Rs. 10.99 Lakh ex-showroom,
comprehensive coverage ensures you are never left with a large out-of-pocket
repair bill. Optional add-on riders are available for enhanced protection.
Standalone Own Damage (OD) Policy
If you already hold a valid third-party policy from another insurer, you can
purchase a Standalone Own Damage policy separately to cover repair
costs for your Kia Seltos. Standalone OD policies became available
following IRDAI regulatory changes, giving car owners the flexibility
to choose their own-damage insurer independently of their TP policy.
The new Seltos launched in January 2026 uses a fresh variant structure (HTE, HTE(O), HTK, HTK(O), HTX, HTX(A), GTX, GTX(A) and X-Line/X-Line(A)), replacing the earlier HTX/HTX+/GTX+ naming. It's larger (4,460mm long, up 95mm), gets 6 airbags as standard and is offered with a 1.5L turbo-petrol (158bhp/253Nm, 6-speed iMT or 7-speed DCT), a diesel option and a CNG option. If you're insuring a pre-2026 Seltos, your RC will likely still show the older HTX/GTX/X-Line naming, that's not an error, just the previous generation. Always match your add-on and IDV choices to the exact variant and model year on your registration certificate, since the price (and therefore IDV) differs meaningfully between generations. Note also that Kia has announced a price hike of up to 2% across Seltos variants effective July 1, 2026, so if you're buying new around that date, check the latest ex-showroom price before finalising your policy.
The insurance premium for your Kia Seltos depends on the variant, fuel type, IDV and the city of registration. The table below gives indicative premiums for current (2nd-gen) Seltos variants, for brand-new cars registered in Zone A cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad).

Premiums are indicative estimates for brand-new cars registered at
Delhi (DL) RTO, inclusive of 18% GST. Actual premiums vary by registration year, variant, fuel type, IDV chosen,
city and insurer. Use the quote tool above for your exact price.
All motor insurance premiums in India (third-party, comprehensive, own-damage and add-ons) attract a flat 18% GST, unchanged by the September 2025 GST 2.0 reforms (which exempted only individual life and health insurance). So on a Rs. 25,000 comprehensive premium (pre-tax), GST adds Rs. 4,500, for a total of Rs. 29,500. The GST 2.0 reforms did reduce GST on small and mid-size new cars, which can modestly lower ex-showroom price and IDV (and therefore the own-damage premium) for buyers of new Seltos units purchased after September 22, 2025. Existing policyholders renewing older Seltos policies see no change and continue paying 18% GST as before.
Third-party (TP) premiums for private cars are regulated and notified by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) in consultation with IRDAI. These rates have been unchanged since FY 2019-20:

Kia Seltos's 1497cc petrol / 1482cc diesel engine falls in the 1000cc–1500cc slab — TP premium Rs. 3,416/year.
Note: MoRTH and IRDAI are currently reviewing a proposal to raise TP premiums by 10–25%, the first revision in over six years. The new rates have not yet been officially notified at the time of writing. Check the IRDAI website (irdai.gov.in) or your insurer's portal at the time of renewal for the rate applicable on your policy start date.

The Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the maximum amount your insurer will pay in case of total loss or theft of your Kia Seltos. IDV is calculated based on the ex-showroom price minus depreciation, as per IRDAI-prescribed depreciation rates.

For cars older than 5 years, IDV is agreed upon mutually between the insurer and the policyholder.
Always avoid choosing the lowest IDV to reduce premium, as this leaves you under-insured in case of total loss.
IRDAI classifies Indian cities into Zone A and Zone B for own-damage (OD) pricing. Zone A cities carry slightly higher premiums due to greater traffic density, accident frequency and theft rates.
Zone A Cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad
Zone B Cities: All other cities and towns in India

Key NCB Facts:
NCB belongs to the owner, not the car — it transfers when you change insurers or when you sell your Seltos and buy a new vehicle.
NCB is lost if you make an own-damage claim during the policy year.
You can protect your accumulated NCB with an NCB Protect Add-on — especially useful for high-NCB policyholders (45–50%).
Standard comprehensive insurance covers the broad strokes, but it has more gaps than most Seltos owners realise. The right add-ons close those gaps without dramatically inflating your premium. Here are the most relevant ones for Kia Seltos owners.
Zero Depreciation Cover (Zero Dep):
At the time of a claim, insurers normally deduct depreciation from parts (plastic, rubber, glass, metal). Zero Dep eliminates this deduction — you receive the full repair or replacement cost without any depreciation cut. Strongly recommended for Kia Seltos under 5 years old.Visit Learn more
Engine protector cover
Covers damage to the engine and gearbox caused by water ingression, hydrostatic lock or leakage of lubricating oil — events not covered under standard comprehensive policies. Particularly important for Seltos owners driving in flood-prone areas.Visit Learn more
Return to invoice (RTI) cover
In case of total loss or theft, RTI pays you the original invoice value of your Kia Seltos rather than the depreciated IDV. Strongly recommended for new Seltos cars in their first 1–3 years.Visit Learn more
Roadside assistance (RSA)
Provides 24×7 help if your Seltos breaks down anywhere — towing, battery jump-start, flat tyre assistance and emergency fuel delivery. Available from most insurers at a minimal additional premium.Visit Learn more
Key and lock replacement cover
Covers the cost of replacing lost or damaged car keys and locks — a practical and affordable add-on for urban Seltos owners.Visit Learn more
Tyre protection cover
Covers repair or replacement of damaged tyres and tubes due to accidental damage, bulging, or burst — expenses not covered under standard comprehensive policies.
Consumables cover
Covers the cost of consumables like engine oil, coolant, nuts and bolts and grease that are usually excluded from standard claims. Useful for Seltos owners who want maximum claim settlement without deductions.
NCB protect
Allows you to make one own-damage claim in a policy year without losing your accumulated NCB. Highly recommended for Seltos policyholders with 35–50% NCB after several claim-free years.

Yes, under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every Kia Seltos on Indian roads must carry at least a valid third-party liability policy. Driving without insurance attracts a fine of up to Rs. 2,000 for the first offence and Rs. 4,000 for repeat violations. Given the Seltos's position as a premium compact SUV with ex-showroom prices ranging from Rs. 10.99 Lakh to nearly Rs. 20 Lakh, comprehensive coverage is strongly recommended over bare-minimum TP cover.
The legal minimum is a third-party (TP) policy. For a newly purchased Kia Seltos, a 3-year bundled TP policy is mandatory at registration. For existing Seltos cars, annual TP renewal is required. A TP-only policy, however, leaves your Seltos — one of India's most popular compact SUVs, completely unprotected against accidents, theft, fire and natural calamities. Comprehensive insurance is essential for this price segment.
IDV equals the ex-showroom price of your Kia Seltos minus IRDAI-prescribed depreciation. A Seltos HTE Petrol priced at Rs. 10.99 Lakh that is 2 years old would carry an IDV of approximately Rs. 8.79 Lakh (after 20% depreciation). Always insure at an IDV close to the market value, setting it too low saves a marginal premium but results in significant under-compensation in a total loss or theft claim.
Yes, NCB is fully portable across insurers. You need an NCB certificate or your previous renewal notice to carry it forward. NCB belongs to the owner (not the vehicle) so it also transfers if you sell your Seltos and buy a new car. Five consecutive claim-free years earns a 50% discount on OD premium, which can mean a saving of Rs. 5,000–10,000 or more annually on a Kia Seltos comprehensive policy.
Yes, standard comprehensive insurance covers damage caused by floods, waterlogging, cyclones and storms. However, engine damage from hydrostatic lock (water entering the engine while driving through a flooded road), is excluded unless you have added an Engine Protector rider. Kia Seltos owners in cities like Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad should strongly consider this add-on, particularly given India's increasingly severe urban flooding during monsoons.
A lapse of more than 90 days requires a pre-acceptance inspection of your Kia Seltos before the insurer will reinstate coverage. You also forfeit all accumulated NCB, potentially losing years of claim-free driving discount. For lapses under 90 days, most insurers renew without inspection. Always renew before the expiry date to protect your NCB, avoid inspection delays and remain legally compliant on Indian roads.
Standard comprehensive insurance deducts depreciation on replaced parts, typically 25–50% on plastic bumpers, rubber seals and glass. Zero Depreciation (Zero Dep) eliminates this deduction, so you receive the full repair or replacement cost. For Kia Seltos under 5 years old, Zero Dep can significantly boost claim payouts, especially for bumper, sensor cluster, or panoramic sunroof replacements on higher variants. It adds approximately Rs. 2,600–4,700 to your annual premium depending on variant.
Every Kia Seltos insurance policy mandatorily includes a Compulsory Personal Accident (CPA) cover of Rs. 15 lakh for the owner-driver. This covers accidental death or permanent total disability while driving. Optional co-passenger PA cover can be added as a rider. The CPA premium is Rs. 750/year and is bundled into your policy, it cannot be waived unless you hold a separate standalone personal accident policy.
Yes, an 18% GST applies to all motor insurance premiums in India (third-party, comprehensive, own-damage and add-ons) and this was unaffected by the September 2025 GST 2.0 reforms that exempted individual life and health insurance. New Seltos buyers may see a marginally lower own-damage premium where the GST 2.0 cut reduced ex-showroom price and IDV, but the 18% tax rate on the insurance premium itself remains unchanged.
