MG Motor India (Morris Garages) has built one of India's most electric-heavy line-ups, spanning the compact Comet EV hatchback to the Rs. 82.50 Lakh Cyberster electric convertible. Of MG's current 9-model range, five are fully electric (Comet EV, Windsor EV, ZS EV, Cyberster, and the M9 MPV), while the Astor, Hector, Hector Plus and Majestor round out the petrol/diesel side. Whatever MG you drive, having the right car insurance is both a legal requirement and essential financial protection. SMC Insurance helps you compare 30+ insurers, choose the right plan for your specific MG model and get an instant policy in minutes, with zero paperwork.

The MG Gloster has been discontinued and succeeded by the Majestor as of mid-2026. The MG Astor's 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine was discontinued in 2025; it is now sold with a single 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine only. The Cyberster and M9 are sold exclusively as single, fully-loaded variants through MG Select premium dealerships, and both saw a price revision of up to Rs. 5 Lakh effective July 2026.
Quick Links — Insurance Types:
Third-Party Insurance (Mandatory)
Third-party car insurance is the
minimum legal requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, for every MG car on Indian roads — whether it's an entry-level Comet EV or a flagship
Cyberster. It covers damage, injury, or death caused to a third party in an accident involving your car. It does not cover damage to your own vehicle,
leaving even a well-maintained MG completely unprotected against accidents, theft, or natural calamities.
Comprehensive Insurance (Recommended)
Comprehensive car insurance
covers third-party liability and your own vehicle damage, making it the strongly recommended choice for all MG owners. It protects against accidents,
theft, fire, floods, earthquakes and other perils. Given that over half of MG's current line-up is fully electric — with expensive battery packs at
their core — comprehensive coverage with the right add-ons ensures you are never left with a large out-of-pocket repair bill, whatever model you
own.
Standalone Own Damage (OD) Policy
If you already hold a valid
third-party policy from another insurer, you can purchase a Standalone Own Damage policy separately to cover repair costs for your MG. Standalone OD
policies became available following IRDAI regulatory changes, giving car owners the flexibility to choose their own-damage insurer independently of
their TP policy.
The insurance premium for your MG depends heavily on the specific model, variant, fuel type and city of registration. The table below gives indicative premiums for one representative model per major MG segment, for brand-new cars registered in Zone A cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad:

Third-party (TP) premiums for private cars are regulated and notified by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) in consultation with IRDAI, based on engine capacity (cc) for petrol/diesel cars and motor power (kW) for electric cars. Across MG's wide lineup, the applicable slabs are:
Annual Third-Party Premium (Private Petrol/Diesel Cars)
|
Engine Capacity |
Annual TP Premium |
Up to 1000cc |
Rs. 2,094 |
1000cc to 1500cc |

|
Slab |
MG Models |
Up to 1000cc — Rs. 2,094 TP |
Not currently applicable to MG's India petrol/diesel range |
1000cc–1500cc — Rs. 3,416 TP |
Astor (1.5L NA Petrol, 1498cc), Hector (1.5L Petrol/Hybrid), Hector Plus (1.5L Petrol/Hybrid) |
Above 1500cc — Rs. 7,897 TP |
Hector (2.0L Diesel), Hector Plus (2.0L Diesel), Majestor (2.0L Twin-Turbo Diesel) |
Note: The Astor's earlier 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine option was discontinued in 2025; it is now sold with a single 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which also sits in the 1000cc–1500cc TP slab.
Annual Third-Party Premium (Private Electric Cars)
More than half of MG's current India line-up — Comet EV, Windsor EV, ZS EV, Cyberster, and the M9 — is fully electric, and is priced under IRDAI's
separate kW-based EV slab structure instead of the cc-based slabs above:
|
Motor Power Output |
Annual TP Premium |
Not exceeding 30 kW |
Rs. 1,780 |
30 kW to 65 kW |
Rs. 2,904 |
Exceeding 65 kW |
Rs. 6,712 |
|
Slab |
MG Electric Models |
Not exceeding 30 kW (Rs. 1,780 TP) |
Not currently applicable to MG's India EV line-up |
30 kW – 65 kW (Rs. 2,904 TP) |
Comet EV (approx. 31 kW) |
Exceeding 65 kW (Rs. 6,712 TP) |
Windsor EV (approx. 100 kW), ZS EV (approx. 95–130 kW depending on variant), Cyberster (approx. 375 kW), M9 |
Note: The Comet EV is unusual within MG's own range — its low-powered city-car motor keeps it in the lower 30–65 kW TP slab, while every other MG EV (Windsor EV, ZS EV, Cyberster, M9) falls in the top "exceeding 65 kW" slab alongside their petrol/diesel siblings, the Majestor and Hector diesel.
Note: A Third-Party Premium Revision May Be Coming in FY 2026-27 MoRTH and IRDAI are currently discussing a proposal to raise third-party premiums by 10-25% across vehicle segments, based on claims experience - the first such revision in nearly six years. The exact new rates have not yet been officially notified, so the rates in the tables above remain in force for now. Given how EV-heavy MG's line-up is, it isn't yet clear whether the current built-in TP discount for EVs will be preserved once the revision lands.
The Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the maximum amount your insurer will pay in case of total loss or theft of your MG. IDV is calculated based on the ex-showroom price minus depreciation, as per IRDAI-prescribed depreciation rates — the same formula applies whether you drive a Comet EV or a Cyberster:
|
Car Age |
Standard Depreciation |
IDV Retained |
Less than 6 months |
5% |
95% |
6 months to 1 year |
15% |
85% |

30% |
70% |
3 to 4 years |
40% |
60% |
4 to 5 years |
50% |
50% |
For cars older than 5 years, IDV is agreed upon mutually between the insurer and
the policyholder. Higher IDV means better coverage but slightly higher premium.
Always avoid choosing the lowest IDV to reduce premium —
it leaves you under-insured in case of total loss, and the gap is proportionally larger the more expensive your specific MG model is.
IRDAI classifies Indian cities into Zone A and Zone B for own-damage (OD) pricing. Zone A cities carry slightly higher premiums due to greater traffic density, accident frequency and theft rates.
Zone A Cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad
Zone B Cities: All other cities and towns in India
Estimated Premium for a 3-Year-Old MG Hector (Petrol/Hybrid):
|
Zone |
Estimated Comprehensive Premium |
Zone A (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai) |
Rs. 23,000 – Rs. 29,500 |
Zone B (e.g., Coimbatore, Madurai) |
Rs. 18,800 – Rs. 24,000 |
Premiums vary further based on the exact model, insurer, IDV, NCB and add-ons selected.
If you haven't made any claim during a policy year, you earn a No Claim Bonus (NCB) — a discount applied to the own-damage (OD) portion of your premium at renewal. NCB is one of the most valuable benefits for careful MG owners across every model in the range.

Key NCB Facts:
NCB belongs to the owner, not the car — it transfers when you change insurers, and even when you trade in one MG model for another.
NCB is lost if you make an own-damage claim during the policy year.
You can protect your accumulated NCB with an NCB Protect add-on — especially useful for high-NCB policyholders (45–50%) on higher-value models like the Majestor or Cyberster.
Standard comprehensive insurance can be enhanced with optional add-on covers. The most useful add-ons for MG cars are:
Zero depreciation cover
At the time of a claim, insurers normally deduct depreciation from
parts such as plastic, rubber, glass, metal — and by default, EV/hybrid batteries. Zero Dep eliminates most of this deduction — you receive a
far higher repair/replacement payout. Strongly recommended across the MG range, and especially important given how many current models are
fully electric.
Battery protection cover
With five of MG's nine current models — Comet EV, Windsor EV, ZS EV,
Cyberster and M9 — being fully electric, battery protection matters more for MG owners than for most brands. A dedicated Battery Protection
add-on, where offered by the insurer, covers damage to the battery pack and battery management system from water ingress, short-circuit, or
fire, reducing the steep default depreciation applied to standard battery claims.
Engine protector cover
The engine
protector coverage covers damage to the engine and gearbox caused by water ingression, hydrostatic lock, or leakage of lubricating oil —
events not covered under standard comprehensive policies. Particularly important for MG's diesel models — the Hector diesel, Hector Plus
diesel and Majestor — when driven in flood-prone areas.
Return to invoice (RTI) cover
In case of total loss (theft or beyond-economical-repair damage), RTI
pays you the original invoice value of your MG — not just the depreciated IDV. Strongly recommended for the first 1–3 years of ownership,
particularly on higher-value models like the Majestor and Cyberster.
Roadside assistance (RSA)
RSA provides 24x7 help if your MG breaks down anywhere — towing, battery jump-start, flat tyre assistance, emergency fuel and more. For MG's
EVs (Comet EV, Windsor EV, ZS EV, Cyberster, M9), RSA typically includes towing to the nearest charging point instead of fuel
delivery.
Key and lock replacement cover
Key and lock replacement cover provides the cost of replacing lost or damaged car keys and locks — a
practical add-on for urban MG owners across models.
Tyre protection cover
Covers repair or replacement of damaged tyres and tubes due to accidental damage,
bulging, or burst — expenses not covered under standard policies.
Consumables cover
Covers the cost of consumables like engine oil, coolant, nuts and bolts,
grease and other items that are usually excluded from standard claims. Useful for MG owners who want maximum claim settlement without
deductions.
NCB Protect
Allows you to make one own-damage claim in a policy year without
losing your accumulated NCB. Highly recommended for policyholders with 35–50% NCB.

Excellent Service
I have purchased a new vehicle and was looking for the car insurance with comprehensive coverage. SMC Website was quick to assist me with the premium amount and the payment process was easy. Happy with their services.
Smooth Process
I purchased my car insurance from SMC, and it has truly been worth it. When my car caused third-party damage, I simply shared the photos and videos with them. Thanks to Sachin, the customer executive, my insurer settled the claim within just a week. Really satisfied with the service!
Excellent Support
This is the best insurance company as they have assisted me well while buying the car insurance policy. Kudos to SMC!
Yes, under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every car on public roads in India (from a Comet EV to a Cyberster)must carry at least a valid third-party liability insurance policy. Driving your MG without insurance carries a fine of up to Rs. 2,000 for the first offence and Rs. 4,000 for subsequent offences, along with possible vehicle impoundment. We strongly recommend a comprehensive policy over bare-minimum third-party coverage.
The minimum is a third-party (TP) insurance policy. For new MG cars, a 3-year bundled TP policy is mandatory at the time of purchase. For MG cars already on the road, annual TP renewal is required. While TP is the legal minimum, it leaves your car — and, on MG's EVs, an expensive battery pack — unprotected against accidents, theft, and natural calamities. Comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended for better financial protection.
Its third-party premium is lower. The Comet EV's low-powered city-car motor (approx. 31 kW) falls in IRDAI's "30–65 kW" EV slab (Rs. 2,904/year TP), while every other MG EV — Windsor EV, ZS EV, Cyberster, M9 — falls in the higher "exceeding 65 kW" slab (Rs. 6,712/year TP). However, comprehensive (own-damage) premiums still depend mainly on the car's price and IDV, not just the TP slab, so a like-for-like comparison should always be model-specific.
IDV (Insured Declared Value) is the ex-showroom price of your MG minus depreciation as per IRDAI norms. For example, a Hector with an ex-showroom price of around Rs. 15.50 Lakh that is 2 years old would have an IDV of approximately Rs. 12.40 Lakh (after 20% depreciation). Always choose an IDV close to the actual market value — setting it too low saves a small premium but severely under-insures your car.
Yes, NCB (No Claim Bonus) is fully transferable when you switch insurers at renewal. You need an NCB certificate or your previous renewal notice from your existing insurer to carry it forward to the new policy. Since NCB belongs to the owner (not the car) it even transfers if you sell your MG and buy a different model. NCB can reduce your OD premium by up to 50% after 5 claim-free years.
Yes, damage caused by floods, waterlogging, or cyclones is covered under comprehensive car insurance. For MG's diesel models (Hector, Hector Plus, Majestor), if water enters the engine causing hydrostatic lock, that specific engine damage is typically excluded unless you have an Engine Protector add-on. For MG's EVs, the battery pack sits low in the floor and is similarly exposed — a Battery Protection add-on is worth considering in flood-prone cities like Chennai, Mumbai, or Bengaluru.
No, MG currently does not offer a factory-fitted CNG option on any model in India — its ICE range (Astor, Hector, Hector Plus, Majestor) is petrol or diesel only, alongside its electric models. If you plan to fit an aftermarket CNG kit on a petrol MG, it must be declared to your insurer and reflected in your RC and policy schedule; an undeclared kit can lead to that specific claim being rejected.
Every car insurance policy in India mandatorily includes a Compulsory Personal Accident (CPA) cover of Rs. 15 lakh for the owner-driver. This covers accidental death or permanent disability of the policyholder while driving the MG. Additional PA cover for co-passengers can be added as an optional rider. The CPA premium is Rs. 750/year and is included in your bundled policy — it cannot be opted out of unless you have a separate standalone PA policy.
