Quick Links — Insurance Types:
Third-Party Insurance (Mandatory)
Third-party car insurance is the
minimum legal requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, for every Toyota car on Indian roads — whether it's an entry-level Glanza or a flagship
Land Cruiser. It covers damage, injury, or death caused to a third party in an accident involving your car. It does not cover damage to your own
vehicle, leaving even a well-maintained Toyota completely unprotected against accidents, theft, or natural calamities.
Comprehensive Insurance (Recommended)
Comprehensive car insurance
covers third-party liability and your own vehicle damage, making it the strongly recommended choice for all Toyota owners. It protects against accidents,
theft, fire, floods, earthquakes and other perils. Given how wide Toyota's price range runs — from budget hatchbacks to Crore-plus luxury SUVs —
comprehensive coverage ensures you are never left with a large out-of-pocket repair bill, whatever model you own.
Standalone Own Damage (OD) Policy
If you already hold a valid
third-party policy from another insurer, you can purchase a Standalone Own Damage policy separately to cover repair costs for your Toyota. Standalone OD
policies became available following IRDAI regulatory changes, giving car owners the flexibility to choose their own-damage insurer independently of
their TP policy.
The insurance premium for your Toyota depends heavily on the specific model, variant, fuel type and city of registration. The table below gives indicative premiums for one representative model per major Toyota segment, for brand-new cars registered in Zone A cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad:

Note: Premiums are indicative estimates for brand-new cars registered at Coimbatore (TN-38) RTO. Actual premiums vary by exact model, variant, fuel type, IDV chosen, city and insurer. Use the quote tool above, or your specific model's insurance page, for an exact price.
Third-party (TP) premiums for private cars are regulated and notified by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) in consultation with IRDAI, based on engine capacity (cc) for petrol/diesel cars and motor power (kW) for electric cars. Across Toyota's wide lineup, the applicable slabs are:
Annual Third-Party Premium (Private Petrol/Diesel Cars)
|
Engine Capacity |
Annual TP Premium |
Up to 1000cc |
Rs. 2,094 |
1000cc to 1500cc |
Rs. 3,416 |
Above 1500cc |
Rs. 7,897 |
|
Slab |
Toyota Models |
Up to 1000cc — Rs. 2,094 TP |
Urban Cruiser Taisor (1.0L Turbo Petrol, 998cc) |
1000cc–1500cc — Rs. 3,416 TP |
Glanza (1.2L, 1197cc), Urban Cruiser Taisor (1.2L, 1197cc), Urban Cruiser Hyryder (1.5L Petrol/Hybrid, 1490cc), Rumion (1.5L, 1462cc) |
Above 1500cc — Rs. 7,897 TP |
Innova Crysta (2.0L Petrol/2.4L Diesel), Innova Hycross (2.0L Hybrid/Petrol), Fortuner/Legender (2.7L Petrol/2.8L Diesel), Hilux (2.8L Diesel), Camry (2.5L Hybrid), Vellfire (2.5L Hybrid), Land Cruiser 300 (3.3L Diesel V6) |
Annual Third-Party Premium (Private Electric Cars)
Toyota's first battery-electric model, the Urban Cruiser Ebella, is priced under IRDAI's separate kW-based EV slab structure:
|
Motor Power Output |
Annual TP Premium |
Not exceeding 30 kW |
Rs. 1,780 |
30 kW to 65 kW |
Rs. 2,904 |
Exceeding 65 kW |
Rs. 6,712 |
Note: The Urban Cruiser Ebella's electric motor (106 kW on the 49kWh version, 128 kW on the 61kWh version) falls in the "exceeding 65 kW" slab, making its TP premium Rs. 6,712/year — lower than what an equivalent large-capacity petrol/diesel Toyota SUV would attract.
Note: A Third-Party Premium Revision May Be Coming in FY 2026-27 MoRTH and IRDAI are currently discussing a proposal to raise third-party premiums by 10-25% across vehicle segments, based on claims experience - the first such revision in nearly six years. The exact new rates have not yet been officially notified, so the rates in the tables above remain in force for now. Given Toyota's exceptionally wide price range, this revision would affect a Glanza owner very differently from a Land Cruiser or Vellfire owner — worth watching if you're planning a renewal in the coming months.
The Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the maximum amount your insurer will pay in case of total loss or theft of your Toyota. IDV is calculated based on the ex-showroom price minus depreciation, as per IRDAI-prescribed depreciation rates — the same formula applies whether you drive a Glanza or a Land Cruiser:
|
Car Age |
Standard Depreciation |
IDV Retained |
Less than 6 months |
5% |
95% |
6 months to 1 year |
15% |
85% |

30% |
70% |
3 to 4 years |
40% |
60% |
4 to 5 years |
50% |
50% |
For cars older than 5 years, IDV is agreed upon mutually between the insurer and
the policyholder. Higher IDV means better coverage but slightly higher premium.
Always avoid choosing the lowest IDV to reduce premium —
it leaves you under-insured in case of total loss, and the gap is proportionally larger the more expensive your specific Toyota model is.
IRDAI classifies Indian cities into Zone A and Zone B for own-damage (OD) pricing. Zone A cities carry slightly higher premiums due to greater traffic density, accident frequency and theft rates.
Zone A Cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad
Zone B Cities: All other cities and towns in India
Estimated Premium for a 3-Year-Old Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder (Strong Hybrid):
|
Zone |
Estimated Comprehensive Premium |
Zone A (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai) |
Rs. 24,500 – Rs. 31,000 |
Zone B (e.g., Coimbatore, Madurai) |
Rs. 19,800 – Rs. 25,500 |
Premiums vary further based on the exact model, insurer, IDV, NCB and add-ons selected.
If you haven't made any claim during a policy year, you earn a No Claim Bonus (NCB) — a discount applied to the own-damage (OD) portion of your premium at renewal. NCB is one of the most valuable benefits for careful Toyota owners across every model in the range.

Key NCB Facts:
NCB belongs to the owner, not the car — it transfers when you change insurers, and even when you trade in one Toyota model for another.
NCB is lost if you make an own-damage claim during the policy year.
You can protect your accumulated NCB with an NCB Protect add-on — especially useful for high-NCB policyholders (45–50%) on higher-value models like the Fortuner, Camry or Vellfire.
Standard comprehensive insurance can be enhanced with optional add-on covers. The most useful add-ons for Toyota cars are:
Zero depreciation cover
At the time of a claim, insurers normally deduct depreciation from
parts such as plastic, rubber, glass and metal. Zero Dep eliminates this deduction — you receive the full repair/replacement cost without any
depreciation cut. Strongly recommended across the Toyota range, and especially valuable on higher-value models like the Innova, Fortuner, Camry
and Vellfire.
Hybrid battery protection cover
Toyota is India's leading champion of strong-hybrid technology — the
Hyryder, Innova Hycross, Camry and Vellfire all run full hybrid powertrains with a dedicated hybrid battery pack. Standard comprehensive policies
typically apply steep depreciation on hybrid battery replacement claims. A dedicated Hybrid Battery Protection add-on, where offered by the insurer,
reduces this deduction and is worth considering for these four models specifically.
Engine protector cover
The engine
protector coverage covers damage to the engine and gearbox caused by water ingression, hydrostatic lock, or leakage of lubricating oil —
events not covered under standard comprehensive policies. Particularly important for diesel Toyota models like the Innova Crysta, Fortuner,
Hilux and Land Cruiser that are often driven in varied terrain and flood-prone areas.
Return to invoice (RTI) cover
In case of total loss (theft or beyond-economical-repair damage), RTI
pays you the original invoice value of your Toyota — not just the depreciated IDV. Strongly recommended for the first 1–3 years of ownership,
particularly on higher-value models like the Fortuner, Camry, Vellfire and Land Cruiser.
Roadside assistance (RSA)
RSA provides 24x7 help if your Toyota breaks down anywhere — towing, battery jump-start, flat tyre assistance, emergency fuel and more.
Available from most insurers at a minimal additional premium.
Key and lock replacement cover
Key and lock replacement cover provides the cost of replacing lost or damaged car keys and locks — a
practical add-on for urban Toyota owners across models.
Tyre protection cover
Covers repair or replacement of damaged tyres and tubes due to accidental damage,
bulging, or burst — expenses not covered under standard policies.
Consumables cover
Covers the cost of consumables like engine oil, coolant, nuts and bolts,
grease and other items that are usually excluded from standard claims. Useful for Toyota owners who want maximum claim settlement without
deductions.
NCB Protect
Allows you to make one own-damage claim in a policy year without
losing your accumulated NCB. Highly recommended for policyholders with 35–50% NCB.

Excellent Service
I have purchased a new vehicle and was looking for the car insurance with comprehensive coverage. SMC Website was quick to assist me with the premium amount and the payment process was easy. Happy with their services.
Smooth Process
I purchased my car insurance from SMC, and it has truly been worth it. When my car caused third-party damage, I simply shared the photos and videos with them. Thanks to Sachin, the customer executive, my insurer settled the claim within just a week. Really satisfied with the service!
Excellent Support
This is the best insurance company as they have assisted me well while buying the car insurance policy. Kudos to SMC!
Yes, under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every car on public roads in India (from a Glanza to a Land Cruiser) must carry at least a valid third-party liability insurance policy. Driving your Toyota without insurance carries a fine of up to Rs. 2,000 for the first offence and Rs. 4,000 for subsequent offences, along with possible vehicle impoundment. We strongly recommend a comprehensive policy over bare-minimum third-party coverage.
The minimum is a third-party (TP) insurance policy. For new Toyota cars, a 3-year bundled TP policy is mandatory at the time of purchase. For Toyota cars already on the road, annual TP renewal is required. While TP is the legal minimum, it leaves your car unprotected against accidents, theft, and natural calamities — comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended for better financial protection, especially on higher-value models.
Standard comprehensive insurance does cover accidental damage to the hybrid battery, but insurers typically apply steep depreciation on battery replacement claims by default. A Zero Depreciation add-on, and a dedicated Hybrid Battery Protection cover where offered, are worth considering for these four models to avoid a large out-of-pocket deduction on a battery-related claim.
IDV (Insured Declared Value) is the ex-showroom price of your Toyota minus depreciation as per IRDAI norms. For example, a Fortuner with an ex-showroom price of around Rs. 42.60 Lakh that is 2 years old would have an IDV of approximately Rs. 34.08 Lakh (after 20% depreciation). Always choose an IDV close to the actual market value — setting it too low saves a small premium but severely under-insures your car.
Yes, NCB (No Claim Bonus) is fully transferable when you switch insurers at renewal. You need an NCB certificate or your previous renewal notice from your existing insurer to carry it forward to the new policy. Since NCB belongs to the owner (not the car) it even transfers if you sell your Toyota and buy a different model. NCB can reduce your OD premium by up to 50% after 5 claim-free years.
Yes, damage caused by floods, waterlogging, or cyclones is covered under comprehensive car insurance. However, if water enters the engine due to driving through a flooded area (causing hydrostatic lock), that specific engine damage is typically excluded unless you have an Engine Protector add-on. Toyota owners in flood-prone cities like Chennai, Mumbai, or Bengaluru should strongly consider adding this cover at a modest additional premium.
Yes, the Glanza, Urban Cruiser Taisor and Rumion are all offered with a factory-fitted CNG option in India. Since it's a factory-fitted kit (not a retrofit), it's automatically included in the vehicle's IDV and comprehensive cover — no separate CNG add-on declaration is needed, unlike with an aftermarket-fitted kit, which must be declared separately to be covered.
Every car insurance policy in India mandatorily includes a Compulsory Personal Accident (CPA) cover of Rs. 15 lakh for the owner-driver. This covers accidental death or permanent disability of the policyholder while driving the Toyota. Additional PA cover for co-passengers can be added as an optional rider. The CPA premium is Rs. 750/year and is included in your bundled policy — it cannot be opted out of unless you have a separate standalone PA policy.
