Types of Car Insurance for Volkswagen Cars

Quick Links — Insurance Types:

→  Third-Party Car Insurance

→  Comprehensive Car Insurance

→  Standalone Own Damage Car Insurance

  • Third-Party Insurance (Mandatory)
Third-party insurance is the minimum legal requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, for every Volkswagen car on Indian roads — whether it is a Taigun, Virtus, Tiguan R-Line, Tayron or Golf GTI. It covers damage, injury or death caused to a third party in an accident involving your car. It does not cover damage to your own vehicle, leaving even a well-maintained Volkswagen unprotected against accidents, theft, fire, flood or natural calamities.

  • Comprehensive Insurance (Recommended)
Comprehensive car insurance covers third-party liability and your own vehicle damage, making it the strongly recommended choice for Volkswagen owners. It protects against accidents, theft, fire, floods, earthquakes and other perils. Since Volkswagen's TSI turbo-petrol engines and European build quality can mean higher part and service costs than mass-market rivals, comprehensive coverage with the right add-ons helps avoid a large out-of-pocket repair bill.

  • Standalone Own Damage (OD) Policy
If you already hold a valid third-party policy from another insurer, you can buy a standalone own damage policy separately to cover repair costs for your Volkswagen. Standalone OD policies became available after IRDAI regulatory changes, giving car owners the flexibility to choose their own-damage insurer independently of their TP policy.

IRDAI Third-Party Premium Slabs for Volkswagen Cars

Third-party (TP) premiums for private cars are regulated and notified by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) in consultation with IRDAI, based on engine capacity (cc). Volkswagen's mainstream India line-up is petrol-only; the Taigun and Virtus fall into the up-to-1000cc or 1000cc-1500cc slabs depending on variant, while the Tiguan R-Line, Tayron and Golf GTI move into the above-1500cc slab.

Taigun 1.5 TSI (1498cc), Virtus 1.5 TSI / GT (1498cc)

Above 1500cc — Rs. 7,897 TP

Tiguan R-Line 2.0 TSI (1984cc), Tayron 2.0 TSI (1984cc), Golf GTI 2.0 TSI (1984cc)

Note: This table should be revisited if Volkswagen launches an EV in India, since electric cars use separate kW-based TP premium slabs rather than petrol cc-based slabs. Volkswagen has confirmed plans to bring the ID.4 and a new sub-4m model (Tera) to India, though neither is on sale yet as of mid-2026.

Note: A Third-Party Premium Revision May Be Coming in FY 2026-27 MoRTH and IRDAI are currently discussing a proposal to raise third-party premiums by 10-25% across vehicle segments, based on claims experience - the first such revision in nearly six years. The exact new rates have not yet been officially notified, so the rates in the table above remain in force for now.

How IDV Is Calculated for Volkswagen Cars

The Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the maximum amount your insurer will pay in case of total loss or theft of your Volkswagen. IDV is calculated based on the ex-showroom price minus depreciation, as per IRDAI-prescribed depreciation rates — the same principle applies whether you drive a Taigun or a Golf GTI:

Car Age

Standard Depreciation

IDV Retained

Less than 6 months

5%

95%

6 months to 1 year

15%

85%

1 to 2 years

20%

80%

2 to 3 years

30%

70%

3 to 4 years

40%

60%

4 to 5 years

50%

50%

For cars older than 5 years, IDV is agreed mutually between the insurer and the policyholder. Higher IDV means better coverage but slightly higher premium.
Always avoid choosing the lowest IDV just to reduce premium — it leaves you under-insured in case of total loss, and the gap is proportionally larger on higher-value Volkswagen models like the Tiguan R-Line, Tayron and Golf GTI.

Volkswagen Car Insurance Premium by City

IRDAI classifies Indian cities into Zone A and Zone B for own-damage (OD) pricing. Zone A cities carry slightly higher premiums due to greater traffic density, accident frequency and theft rates.

  • Zone A Cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad

  • Zone B Cities: All other cities and towns in India

Estimated Premium for a 3-Year-Old Volkswagen Taigun (1.5 TSI):

Zone

Estimated Comprehensive Premium

Zone A (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai)

Rs. 25,000 – Rs. 32,000

Zone B (e.g., Coimbatore, Madurai)

Rs. 21,000 – Rs. 27,000

Premiums vary further based on the exact model, insurer, IDV, NCB and add-ons selected.

No Claim Bonus (NCB) on Volkswagen Car Insurance

If you haven't made any claim during a policy year, you earn a No Claim Bonus (NCB) — a discount applied to the own-damage (OD) portion of your premium at renewal. NCB is one of the most valuable benefits for careful Volkswagen owners because it compounds with each claim-free year.

Claim-Free Years

NCB Discount

1 year

20%

2 consecutive years

25%

3 consecutive years

35%

4 consecutive years

45%

5 consecutive years

50%

Key NCB Facts:

  • NCB belongs to the owner, not the car — it transfers when you change insurers, and even when you trade in one Volkswagen model for another.

  • NCB is lost if you make an own-damage claim during the policy year.

  • You can protect your accumulated NCB with an NCB Protect add-on — especially useful for high-NCB policyholders on higher-value models like the Tiguan R-Line, Tayron and Golf GTI.

Add-on Covers for Volkswagen car insurance

Standard comprehensive insurance can be enhanced with optional add-on covers. The most useful add-ons for Volkswagen cars are:

Zero depreciation cover

At the time of a claim, insurers normally deduct depreciation from parts such as plastic, rubber, glass and metal.Zero Dep eliminates eliminates this deduction — you receive the full repair/replacement cost without depreciation cut. Strongly recommended for Volkswagen owners because European-sourced parts and body panels can be expensive.

Engine protector cover

The engine protector covers damage to the engine and gearbox caused by water ingress, hydrostatic lock or leakage of lubricating oil — events not covered under standard comprehensive policies. Relevant for turbo-petrol TSI engines, especially in flood-prone cities and during monsoons.

Return to invoice (RTI) cover

In case of total loss or theft, RTI pays you the original invoice value of your car, not just the depreciated IDV. Strongly recommended for the first 1–3 years of ownership, particularly on premium models like the Tayron, Tiguan R-Line and Golf GTI.

Roadside assistance (RSA)

RSA provides 24x7 help if your Volkswagen breaks down anywhere — towing, battery jump-start, flat tyre support, emergency fuel, minor on-road repairs and coordination with the nearest authorised service centre.

Key and lock replacement cover

Key and lock replacement cover covers the cost of replacing lost or damaged smart keys and locksets — a practical add-on for Volkswagen owners since remote keys can be expensive.

Tyre protection cover

Covers repair or replacement of tyres and tubes due to accidental damage, bulging or burst. Useful for Taigun, Virtus GT, Tiguan R-Line, Tayron and Golf GTI owners using larger alloy wheels or lower-profile tyres.

Consumables cover

Covers costs of engine oil, coolant, nuts, bolts, grease and other consumables used during insured repairs. Helpful for larger accidental repair jobs where these small items can add up.

FAQs

Yes, under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every car on public roads in India - from a Taigun to a Golf GTI - must carry at least a valid third-party liability insurance policy. Driving your Volkswagen without insurance can attract penalties and may also lead to vehicle-related enforcement action. We strongly recommend a comprehensive policy over bare-minimum third-party coverage.

The minimum is a third-party (TP) insurance policy. For new Volkswagen cars, a 3-year bundled TP policy is mandatory at the time of purchase. For cars already on the road, annual TP renewal is required. While TP is the legal minimum, it does not protect your own Volkswagen against accidents, theft, floods or fire.

Generally yes. The Taigun has a much lower ex-showroom price and IDV than the premium imported/CKD SUVs, so its own-damage premium is lower. The 1.0 TSI Taigun also falls in the lowest up-to-1000cc TP slab, while the Tiguan R-Line, Tayron and Golf GTI use 2.0 TSI engines that fall in the above-1500cc TP slab.

IDV is the ex-showroom price of your Volkswagen minus depreciation as per IRDAI norms. For example, a Taigun worth around Rs. 10.99 lakh when new may have an IDV of approximately Rs. 10.45 lakh in the first six months after applying 5% depreciation. Always choose an IDV close to actual market value; setting it too low saves only a small premium but can severely under-insure your car.

Yes, NCB is fully transferable when you switch insurers at renewal. You need an NCB certificate or previous renewal notice from your existing insurer. Since NCB belongs to the owner and not the car, it can also transfer when you sell one Volkswagen and buy another model.

Yes, damage caused by floods, waterlogging or cyclones is covered under comprehensive car insurance. However, engine damage caused by water ingress or hydrostatic lock may be excluded unless you have an Engine Protector add-on. Volkswagen owners in flood-prone cities should strongly consider this add-on.

No, Volkswagen's current India portfolio is petrol-led, with TSI turbo-petrol engines across the Taigun, Virtus, Tiguan R-Line, Tayron and Golf GTI. There is no factory diesel or CNG option in the current line-up. This simplifies third-party pricing because premiums are based on petrol engine capacity slabs.

Every car insurance policy in India mandatorily includes Compulsory Personal Accident (CPA) cover of Rs. 15 lakh for the owner-driver. It covers accidental death or permanent disability of the policyholder while driving the insured Volkswagen. Additional PA cover for passengers can be added as an optional rider. The CPA premium is Rs. 750/year and is included in your bundled policy - it cannot be opted out of unless you have a separate standalone PA policy.
