EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal 2026: UAN Login, Registration, Activation & Password Reset

The EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal is the official online platform where EPF members can access UAN-based services such as their passbook, UAN card, KYC details, service history and online claims. As of 2026, direct UAN generation and UAN activation through the Member Portal have been discontinued. Members must use the UMANG app and Aadhaar-based Face Authentication for these services. Password reset continues to be available through the Member Portal's "Forgot Password" option.

You open the EPFO Member Portal to check your PF balance before a home loan application and the "Activate UAN" link either does nothing or throws an error you have never seen before. If you searched for a guide last year, chances are it told you to click that link, enter your Aadhaar and OTP and get your UAN activated on the spot. That process does not work anymore. EPFO moved UAN generation and activation off the EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal and onto the UMANG app and most of the older guides floating around online still have not caught up. This piece walks through exactly what changed, how login, registration and password reset actually work in 2026 and where members keep getting stuck.

What Is the EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal?

The EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal, also called the Unified Member Portal, is the official website through which EPF subscribers manage everything tied to their Universal Account Number. Once your UAN is active, you can log in to check your EPF passbook, download your UAN card, review your service history across employers, update KYC details, file e-nominations and track claims. It is run by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation and is meant to be the single window for salaried employees covered under the EPF scheme.

Here is the part that has genuinely changed for 2026: new UAN generation and UAN activation are no longer done directly on this portal. EPFO shifted both to the UMANG app, where members complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication instead of the old OTP flow. If you are looking for how to register or activate your UAN, skip ahead to that section, because the steps below only cover what the portal itself still handles.

EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal: Key Services at a Glance

Not every service on the portal works the same way for every member and EPFO keeps adjusting what shows on the dashboard as it upgrades its systems. Still, this table covers what most active, KYC-verified members can expect to find once they are logged in.

Note: Exact options can vary depending on your employer's establishment, your KYC status and any ongoing EPFO system upgrade. If a service you expect to see is missing, check whether your KYC is complete before assuming something is broken.

What Is a UAN and Why Does It Matter?

Your Universal Account Number is a 12-digit identifier that EPFO assigns once and never changes, no matter how many times you switch jobs. It is easy to confuse with a Member ID, so it helps to separate the two clearly.

Your UAN is the permanent number that follows you for life. Your Member ID is the account number your employer's establishment assigns for that specific job and you can end up with several of these linked under one UAN over a career. Your EPF account is where the actual contributions sit, tracked separately for each Member ID but rolled up under your UAN for reporting.

An activated UAN is required for many EPFO online services, including accessing the passbook and filing eligible online claims. However, some functions, such as UAN recovery and password-reset initiation, have separate processes.

How to Log In to the EPFO Member Portal

Logging in is the one part of this process that has not changed. If your UAN is already active, here is what to do.

  1. Go to the official EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in.

  2. Enter your 12-digit UAN in the login field.

  3. Enter the password linked to your UAN account.

  4. Type the captcha exactly as shown; it is case-sensitive.

  5. Click "Sign In" to reach your member dashboard.

Stick to this official URL and avoid third-party sites that promise a faster login. EPFO has repeatedly warned members against entering UAN credentials anywhere outside its own domain and unofficial "UAN login" pages are a common phishing setup.

UAN Registration and Activation in 2026: What Actually Changed

This is the update most third-party guides have not caught up with and it is the one that matters most if you are stuck. Until mid-2025, you could generate a new UAN or activate an existing one directly on the Member Portal using Aadhaar OTP. EPFO discontinued that route through a circular issued on 30 July 2025, effective 1 August 2025 and reinforced the change through a system upgrade completed in mid-2026.

The portal itself now states this plainly: direct UAN allotment through the website has been discontinued and activation must go through Aadhaar-based Face Authentication on the UMANG app. If a blog or video still shows you clicking "Activate UAN" and entering an OTP on the website, it is describing a process that no longer exists.

The distinction that trips people up is generation versus activation. Generation is what happens when you do not have a UAN yet, typically as a first-time employee. Activation is what happens when you already have a UAN, perhaps allotted by an employer, but have never switched it on for online use. Both now route through the same app, but through different menu options.

How to Generate a New UAN Through UMANG

If you have never been allotted a UAN, or you need one as a fresh EPF member, this is the current process.

  1. Download the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

  2. Open the app and select EPFO Services.

  3. Under "UAN Services Through Face Auth," choose "UAN Allotment and Activation."

  4. Enter your Aadhaar number and the mobile number linked to it.

  5. Verify the OTP sent to that mobile number.

  6. Install the Aadhaar FaceRD app if prompted and complete the face scan.

  7. Once verification succeeds, your UAN is generated and sent to your registered mobile number along with a temporary password.

EPFO introduced Aadhaar-based Face Authentication to simplify UAN generation and improve the accuracy of member information. EPFO has said the process is intended to reduce errors that can arise from incorrect or incomplete member details.

How to Activate an Existing UAN Through UMANG

If your employer has already allotted you a UAN but you have never activated it, follow this instead.

  1. Open the UMANG app and go to EPFO Services.

  2. Select "UAN Activation" under "UAN Services Through Face Auth."

  3. Enter your UAN, Aadhaar number and Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

  4. Give consent for Aadhaar-based validation and verify the OTP.

  5. Complete the Face Authentication scan.

  6. Wait for successful Face Authentication and EPFO validation.

  7. Once activation is completed, use your UAN credentials to sign in to the Member e-Sewa Portal.

  8. Use these credentials to log in to the Member Portal and change your password.

Make sure your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar before you start. If it is not, the OTP step will fail regardless of how many times you retry and you will need to fix that linkage first.

UAN Member Portal: Employees vs Employers

It helps to be clear that employees and employers use two entirely different EPFO interfaces and mixing them up is a common source of confusion.

  • As an employee, you use the Member e-Sewa Portal for anything tied to your own PF account: login, passbook, KYC, service history, e-nomination and claims. This is the portal covered throughout this article.

  • An employer, on the other hand, uses a separate Employer Interface for establishment-level functions such as registering the business, enrolling employees, filing electronic challans, approving employee KYC updates and staying compliant with EPF contribution rules. An employee should never try to use the employer portal to check their own personal PF account, since it simply is not built for that purpose and the login credentials work differently.

Alternative Ways to Check Your PF Details

You do not have to rely on the Member Portal for everything. EPFO offers a few parallel channels and each one suits a different situation.

The EPFO Passbook Portal, a separate site from the Member Portal, lets you log in with your UAN and password to view and download your contribution records directly. The UMANG app covers passbook viewing, balance checks and now the UAN generation and activation services described above, all from one mobile app. For a quick check without opening any app, the SMS service works if your mobile number is registered with your UAN: send "EPFOHO UAN ENG" to 7738299899 and you will get your balance back by text, with other language codes available if you prefer a reply in Hindi, Tamil, or several other regional languages. The missed call facility works the same way for members whose UAN is seeded with Aadhaar, PAN, or a bank account: call 9966044425 from your registered number and the call disconnects on its own after a couple of rings, followed by an SMS with your details. If none of that resolves your issue, the EPFO Grievance Portal is the formal route for unresolved PF or UAN problems that need EPFO's direct attention.

Who Can Use the EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal?

Access to the portal is tied to being a covered EPF member, not to employment status in general. This generally includes salaried employees whose organisation is registered with EPFO, members who already hold a UAN from a previous job and employees with several Member IDs linked under one UAN. Contractual and direct employees covered under the EPF Scheme also qualify, once their employer has completed the enrolment formalities.

It is worth being clear that not every worker in India automatically has an EPFO account. Gig workers, unorganised-sector employees and others outside formal EPF coverage are handled through a separate framework; the government's e-Shram Card scheme exists precisely for that group and it is not interchangeable with a UAN.

How to Reset Your EPFO UAN Password

Unlike activation, password reset has stayed on the portal itself and did not move to UMANG. Here is the current process.

  1. Go to the official EPFO Member Portal login page.

  2. Click "Forgot Password" below the sign-in fields.

  3. Enter your UAN and the captcha shown, then submit.

  4. Verify your name, date of birth and gender when prompted.

  5. Enter your Aadhaar number and give consent for Aadhaar-based verification.

  6. Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

  7. Create a new password, confirm it and submit.

The whole process depends on having access to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar and UAN, so if that number is out of service, you will need to sort that out before you can reset anything. Some members report that a freshly reset password takes a few hours to become fully active across every EPFO service, so if the passbook portal still rejects your new password immediately after resetting it on the Member Portal, wait a bit before trying again.

What If Your Registered Mobile Number Has Changed?

This is one of the more common problems we hear about and it is also one of the easiest to make worse by overreacting. Password reset and OTP-based verification both depend on the mobile number on file with EPFO, so if you have switched numbers, follow EPFO's current update or recovery mechanism through the portal or UMANG rather than trying to force a reset with an old number. If you no longer have access to that number at all, use whatever alternate verification route EPFO currently provides rather than assuming you are stuck. If you have forgotten your password and no longer have access to your registered mobile number, EPFO's current FAQ says you can choose the option to receive the OTP on another mobile number. You may then be asked to verify your name, date of birth and gender, followed by Aadhaar verification. After successful verification, the new mobile number can be used to complete the password reset.

What you should never do is create a second UAN because you lost access to your registered number. EPFO treats duplicate UANs as an error that needs correction, not a fix and untangling a duplicate later is far more painful than sorting out a mobile number update now. If your Aadhaar-linked number itself needs updating, that has to happen at the UIDAI end first; our guide on how to update your mobile number in Aadhaar walks through that separately, since EPFO cannot fix an Aadhaar-side mismatch on its own.

Password Requirements on the EPFO Member Portal

EPFO's password rules have been described a little differently across its own documentation over the years and third-party sites do not always agree either. The safest approach is to follow whatever rule the screen shows you at the exact moment you are creating or resetting a password, since EPFO can tighten or adjust these requirements as it upgrades its systems. As a general pattern, expect the portal to ask for a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, at least one number and at least one special character, within a length range the screen will specify. Do not treat any fixed character count from an old article as gospel; verify it on-screen when you actually set the password.

Common EPFO UAN Login Problems and Fixes

Most login trouble falls into a handful of repeat categories. This table covers the ones members run into most often.

Problem

What to Do

Incorrect password

Use "Forgot Password" instead of guessing repeatedly

UAN not activated

Activate through UMANG, not the portal

Forgotten UAN

Use EPFO's official UAN recovery option with registered mobile and ID proof

Mobile number changed

Follow EPFO's current mobile update process before attempting a reset

OTP not received

Check network signal and confirm the number is Aadhaar-linked, then retry

Aadhaar mismatch

Verify your name and date of birth match exactly across Aadhaar and EPFO records

Portal temporarily unavailable

Retry after some time; avoid repeated submissions, which can flag your account

Passbook not loading

Try the dedicated Passbook Portal separately from the Member Portal

Duplicate UAN

Contact your employer or EPFO directly for correction; do not create a third UAN

Note: If login continues to fail, use the official password-reset or account-recovery options rather than repeatedly entering incorrect credentials.

UAN and Aadhaar Linking

Aadhaar sits at the centre of almost every EPFO online service now, from login recovery to the Face Authentication used for activation. Make sure your name and date of birth match exactly between your Aadhaar record and your EPFO record, because even a minor mismatch, like a missing middle name, can cause verification to fail during activation or password reset. If you are filing an online claim, note that Aadhaar-linked UAN is a prerequisite and any confusion here can delay a withdrawal; our breakdown of current EPF withdrawal rules covers what to check before you submit a claim.

e-Nomination on the EPFO Portal

Filing a nomination is mandatory for EPF members under the EPF Scheme, 2026, according to the current EPFO Member Portal. Members can file and update their e-Nomination during their service period. An updated nomination can help ensure that eligible benefits are directed to the appropriate nominee or family members in the event of the member's death.

EPFO Login Safety Tips

A few habits go a long way here. Use only the official EPFO website and the UMANG app, never a third-party "UAN login" link. Never share your password or any OTP with anyone, including someone claiming to call from EPFO. EPFO has stated clearly, on its own passbook portal, that it never asks for Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details over the phone and never asks you to deposit money into any account. Avoid paying anyone who offers to "activate" your UAN faster, since the official process is free and always double-check the website's domain before typing in any personal details.

UAN Customer Care

If self-service does not resolve your issue, EPFO's helpdesk can assist with UAN problems, PF account questions, login and password trouble, KYC, claims and transfers. Keep your UAN, registered mobile number and any error message ready before you call, since that speeds up the resolution considerably. For anything that does not get sorted through the helpline, the EPFO Grievance Portal is the formal escalation route.

One habit worth building: never trust a customer care number you find through a random search result or social media post. Fraudulent numbers posing as EPFO support are common enough that it is worth sticking only to numbers listed on EPFO's own official website.

Wrapping Up

The single biggest shift for 2026 is this: UAN generation and activation have left the Member e-Sewa Portal entirely and now run through the UMANG app with Aadhaar Face Authentication. Everything else, login, password reset, passbook access, KYC and claims, still works through the familiar portal and passbook site. If you are stuck on activation, stop looking for the old "Activate UAN" button and open UMANG instead. If you have forgotten your password, the Member Portal's "Forgot Password" flow still handles that directly. And whatever you do, keep your Aadhaar-linked mobile number current, since nearly every recovery path on EPFO now runs through it.

FAQs

It is EPFO's official online platform for EPF members, where you access UAN-based services like your passbook, UAN card, KYC updates, service history and claims once your UAN is active.

Enter your UAN, your password and the captcha shown on the official login page, then click Sign In. This step has not changed in 2026.

New UAN generation happens through the UMANG app under EPFO Services, using "UAN Allotment and Activation" with Aadhaar-based Face Authentication. It is no longer available on the Member Portal itself.

No, the portal currently states this facility has been discontinued and directs members to complete UAN activation on UMANG through Face Authentication instead.

Use UMANG's "UAN Allotment and Activation" option under "UAN Services Through Face Auth," complete Aadhaar verification and a face scan and your UAN plus a temporary password will arrive by SMS.

Click "Forgot Password" on the Member Portal, verify your identity with your UAN, personal details and Aadhaar OTP, then set a new password. This process still runs on the portal, not UMANG.

Use EPFO's official UAN recovery option, which typically asks for your registered mobile number and proof of identity or address, verified through OTP.

Yes, EPFO provides a facility in the Member Profile section to change the mobile number linked with the UAN after login. If you have forgotten your password and no longer have access to your registered mobile number, EPFO also provides an alternate-mobile password-reset route involving verification of basic details and Aadhaar.

Log in to the dedicated EPFO Passbook Portal with your UAN and password, select your Member ID and download the passbook in PDF format.

Yes, send "EPFOHO UAN ENG" by SMS to 7738299899, or give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile number, provided your UAN is seeded with Aadhaar, PAN, or a bank account.

No, UAN is your permanent, lifelong identifier. Your PF account sits under a Member ID, which changes with each employer, while your UAN stays constant and links every Member ID you have ever had.

An activated UAN is required for many EPFO online services, including accessing the passbook and filing eligible online claims. Members who need to activate an existing UAN must now use the UMANG app with Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.

You should not. If a duplicate UAN arises, usually from a new employer generating one without checking for an existing record, contact your employer or EPFO to get it merged rather than using both.

Yes, as long as you access it through the official domain and protect your password, OTPs and personal details. EPFO will never call to ask for these over the phone.
