To reprint your PAN card online, visit the official Protean or UTIITSL portal, depending on which agency processed your latest PAN application. Enter the required details, complete the authentication process and pay the applicable fee. Protean currently charges Rs. 50 for delivery within India and Rs. 959 for international delivery. The card is sent to the communication address registered with the Income Tax Department. If you need an electronic copy, check whether you can download your existing e-PAN through the relevant PAN service provider. Reprinting does not change your PAN number.

Nobody thinks about a PAN card until a bank officer or an insurance proposal form asks for it and by then the folder it was supposed to be in holds nothing but old bills. A quick search on how to reprint PAN cards online throws up dozens of pages and quite a few belong to private agents who charge far more than the Rs. 50 the official portals ask for the same job. Add the confusion between Protean and UTIITSL and a card that gets posted to an address you left years ago and a simple errand starts to feel like a project.
By the end of this guide you will know which portal to use and what it costs and how to get a usable copy of your PAN today while the physical card is still in the post.
Before You Reprint PAN Card Online, Work Out Which PAN Portal Applies to You
The portal is the first decision and getting it wrong is behind most failed attempts.
The Income Tax Department works with two agencies for PAN services, Protean eGov Technologies (formerly NSDL e-Governance) and UTIITSL and your reprint request has to go to the one that holds your latest application. Protean's reprint facility is open if your most recent PAN application was processed through Protean, or if you got your PAN through the Instant e-PAN service on the Income Tax e-filing portal. Anyone whose last application went through UTIITSL has to reprint there instead.
The quickest check is your original acknowledgement email or allotment letter. If you cannot find either, try Protean first with your PAN and date of birth, because the portal will usually tell you when your record sits with the other agency.
A Reprint Is Not a Correction
Here is the condition that trips up most applicants. A reprint reproduces exactly what the Income Tax Department already holds, so it cannot fix a surname that changed after marriage or a date of birth that was entered wrongly. If your name, date of birth or other PAN details are incorrect, you must request a correction rather than a simple reprint. This is also worth checking if you are planning to buy or renew an insurance policy, as differences in your PAN details may cause problems during KYC verification. You can refer to SMC Insurance's guide on KYC documents required for bike insurance to understand the documents typically needed. The applicable charges depend on the type of correction and the service used. Some Aadhaar-based updates, including changes to the registered communication address, can be completed free of cost through the authorised PAN service providers.
What It Costs to Reprint PAN Card Online and How the Options Compare
Money is the easy part, because the official fee is small and the real question is whether you need a plastic card at all.
Option |
Official fee |
Eligibility / purpose |
Protean e-PAN download within 30 days | Free, up to 3 deliveries | Latest PAN application processed by Protean; PAN allotted or changes confirmed within 30 days |
Protean e-PAN download after 30 days | Rs. 8.26, including taxes | Eligible existing PAN holders whose latest application was processed through Protean |
Instant e-PAN through Income Tax portal | Free | Eligible individuals who have never been allotted a PAN |
Physical PAN reprint within India | Rs. 50, including taxes | Eligible applicants using Protean's reprint service |
Physical PAN reprint outside India | Rs. 959, including taxes | Eligible applicants using Protean's reprint service |
Note: Protean fees verified against its official service pages. UTIITSL charges should be verified separately before publication.
The Rs. 50 is inclusive of taxes and the form never asks where to deliver the card, because Protean posts it to the communication address held by the Income Tax Department. Keep that in mind if you have moved house since your last update.
Can You Update Your Address Before Reprinting PAN?
If you have moved since your PAN details were last updated, check your registered communication address before requesting a reprint. Protean sends the physical card to the address available in the Income Tax Department's records, and the basic reprint form does not let you enter a different delivery address.
The government provides an Aadhaar-based online facility for eligible PAN holders to update their communication address. You can use the address-update service offered by Protean or UTIITSL before requesting your new card.
PAN cards have carried QR codes since 2017–18, so this feature is not new to PAN 2.0. The PAN 2.0 project aims to introduce enhanced QR codes and bring PAN-related services together on a unified platform. If your older card does not have a QR code, you can request an updated physical card. However, there is no requirement to replace an existing valid PAN card merely because of PAN 2.0. Your PAN number remains unchanged. The unified PAN 2.0 portal that is meant to replace the separate sites was still being phased in when we last checked, which means the Protean and UTIITSL pages remain the working route for now.
A lost PAN card is usually the first sign that the rest of your paperwork is scattered too and insurance documents tend to go missing right before a renewal or a claim. If a policy is due or you are buying a new one, our advisors can sort the KYC side with you at SMC Insurance before it turns into a delay.
Do the New Income Tax Rules Affect Existing PAN Cards?
The Income Tax Rules, 2026 introduced new application forms for fresh PAN allotments from 1 April 2026. However, existing PAN and TAN numbers remain valid. If you already have a PAN and only need another copy of your card, you do not have to apply for a new PAN number under the revised rules.
How to Reprint PAN Card Online on the Protean Portal, Step by Step
Keep your Aadhaar-linked mobile phone within reach, since the whole application hinges on a single OTP.
- Open the reprint page
Go to https://onlineservices.proteantech.in/paam/ReprintEPan.html and read the instructions at the top, which repeat the eligibility rule and the fee. - Fill in your details
Enter your PAN, your Aadhaar number (needed for individuals) and your date of birth. The GSTIN field is optional. - Give consent and submit
Tick the Aadhaar authentication declarations, solve the captcha and submit. The page can be switched to Hindi, Tamil and four other languages if that is easier. - Authenticate
Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number, or use biometric authentication if that is offered to you. - Pay Rs. 50
Pay online by card, net banking or UPI. No photograph or document upload is asked for in a plain reprint. - Save the acknowledgement number
You get a 15-digit number after payment and a screenshot of it is worth taking, since it is how you track the request. - Wait for the post
Once your reprint request is processed, the PAN card is dispatched to the communication address available in the Income Tax Department's records. Delivery time can vary depending on processing and postal services. Keep your acknowledgement details so you can check the status of your application.
There is no deadline to reprint a PAN card, but the free e-PAN window is only 30 days for a PAN that was freshly allotted or updated. As for what happens if you simply delay, nothing dramatic happens until the day a KYC form, an income tax return or a new account stalls because you cannot produce the number or the document.
If UTIITSL Processed Your PAN
Go to pan.utiitsl.com, choose the Reprint PAN Card service, enter the details it asks for, complete the OTP check and pay the fee shown on screen. The steps mirror Protean's, though the screens look different.
Download e-PAN Online While You Wait for the Reprinted Card
Fifteen to twenty days is a long stretch to go without PAN proof and you do not have to.
If you already have a PAN and need an electronic copy while waiting for your reprinted card, check the e-PAN download facility offered by the agency that processed your latest PAN application. Protean allows eligible PAN holders to receive an e-PAN at their registered email address. The service is free for up to three deliveries if the PAN was allotted or its details were updated within the last 30 days. After this period, the fee is Rs. 8.26, including taxes.
Do not confuse this service with the Income Tax Department's Instant e-PAN facility. Instant e-PAN is meant for eligible individuals who have not previously been allotted a PAN. It cannot be used to obtain a new PAN simply because an existing card has been lost.
And for most insurance purchases that is enough. Insurers have largely moved to paperless verification through Aadhaar OTP, PAN validation against government databases and DigiLocker uploads, as our guide to the KYC documents insurers ask for explains, so the plastic card is rarely what holds up a policy.
Reprint PAN Card Online from Abroad: What Changes for NRIs
The process is the same in spirit and only the delivery address and the Aadhaar requirement change the picture.
Paying Rs. 959 gets the card dispatched outside India, whereas a card sent to an Indian address, perhaps a parent's home, stays at Rs. 50. The catch is that the Aadhaar field is mandatory for individuals on Protean's form, so an NRI without an Aadhaar number cannot complete this online route and would need the agency's change-request or offline process instead. Protean's customer care line, 020-27218080, runs from 7 am to 11 pm and can confirm the current document list for that case.
NRIs who also plan to keep Indian cover for parents or themselves will find a working PAN useful at the KYC stage and our note on health insurance for NRIs covers what else to line up.
Why a PAN Card Reprint Request Fails and How to Avoid Look-Alike Sites
Most rejections come down to a handful of mismatches, which is good news because each has a fix.
What you see |
Likely cause |
What to do |
Message that your latest application was processed elsewhere | Your PAN went through the other agency | Repeat the request on the UTIITSL or Protean portal, whichever you did not use |
Aadhaar OTP never arrives | Mobile number not linked to Aadhaar | Update the number with UIDAI, then retry |
Details do not match | Name or date of birth differs from the PAN record | File a correction application instead of a reprint |
Card reaches an old address | Income tax record still carries the old communication address | Update the address first, then reprint |
Note: This table covers the usual causes and is not exhaustive. If your case does not fit, the agency helpline is the faster route than repeated attempts.
As for the sites that charge extra, only Protean and UTIITSL process reprints and the Income Tax e-filing portal handles e-PAN, so anything asking for a fee well above Rs. 50 for a plain reprint deserves suspicion. If you think your lost card is being misused, file a police report, inform the Income Tax Department and watch your bank statements and credit report for transactions you do not recognise.
Summing Up,
Reprinting a PAN card is far less of an ordeal than the number of confusing websites suggests. The job comes down to picking the right agency, entering your PAN, Aadhaar and date of birth, authenticating with one OTP and paying Rs. 50. Your PAN number never changes and a physical card typically arrives in around 15 to 20 days at the address on your income tax record. Check that address before you apply, because that is the one detail the form will not let you correct. If you need proof in the meantime, a digitally signed e-PAN is only a few minutes away and for many KYC processes it will do the job. Keep a scanned copy somewhere you can reach it from your phone so that you never go hunting through folders again. And once the PAN is sorted, it is a good moment to review the documents behind your cover, whether that is a renewal or a fresh
term insurance plan.

FAQs
Not through Protean's online form, where the Aadhaar field is mandatory for individuals and authentication happens through an Aadhaar OTP or biometrics. If you do not have Aadhaar, you would need the agency's offline or change-request process, which usually involves submitting documents. Protean's helpline can confirm what is accepted in your situation before you pay for anything.
Protean charges Rs. 50, including taxes, to deliver a reprinted PAN card within India and Rs. 959 for delivery outside India. UTIITSL applicants should check the applicable fee on its official portal. If you only need an electronic PAN, Protean offers up to three free e-PAN deliveries within 30 days of allotment or confirmation of changes. After that period, the charge is Rs. 8.26, including taxes.
Plan for roughly 15 to 20 days from the date of payment. The card goes to the communication address held by the Income Tax Department, so delays often come from an outdated address rather than from the printing itself. Your 15-digit acknowledgement number lets you track the request on the portal you applied through.
No, a reprint is a fresh card carrying the same PAN and the same details already on record. It only changes the physical card and if your older card lacks the QR code, the new one will generally include it. Nothing needs to be updated with your bank or employer.
Yes, an officially issued e-PAN is a valid electronic form of PAN and can be used for PAN verification. However, the documents accepted for a particular transaction may depend on the institution's requirements. If a bank, insurer or another organisation specifically requests a physical card, confirm its document requirements before proceeding.
Then a reprint will not help, because it reproduces the existing record without any change. You need to file a changes or correction application with the supporting documents the agency asks for and the corrected card is printed after the record is updated. This route costs more than the Rs. 50 reprint.
Use the acknowledgement number you received after payment on the same portal you applied through, either Protean or UTIITSL. If you lost the number, the helpline of that agency is the place to start. Keep the acknowledgement until the card is in your hands.
