A renewal is successful only when you hold a new policy schedule with fresh start and end dates, and your insurer's app or VAHAN shows the policy as active. A debited payment alone proves nothing. Check the confirmation email first, then search your registration number on VAHAN or mParivahan. If the old expiry still appears, wait a few days, then call your insurer with the transaction ID.

The bank has debited the premium and the car insurance renewal page flashed "successful", yet no policy PDF has reached your inbox and the insurer's app still shows last year's dates. That gap is where owners lose money, because a renewal that stalled quietly can leave the car uninsured on the daily commute, and a challan or a rejected claim is usually how people find out. The fix takes about five minutes, and you can check your car insurance status with just the registration number. Here is how to confirm the renewal went through and what to do when it did not.

Signs Your Car Insurance Renewal Confirmation Is Genuine

Start with what should already be in your inbox, since the insurer's own paperwork is the fastest proof.

A completed renewal should be supported by an updated policy schedule and payment acknowledgement, usually accessible through the insurer's website, app or registered email. Check the policy's effective date and time, expiry date and coverage details rather than relying on the payment confirmation alone. Section 64VB of the Insurance Act, 1938 generally requires premium payment or an accepted payment arrangement before an insurer assumes risk. If the transaction fails or is reversed, contact the insurer immediately to establish whether the policy was issued and whether coverage is in force.

How to Check Car Insurance Renewal Status Online

If nothing arrived, or you want a second opinion, a few official routes will show where the policy stands.

Method

What to check

Important consideration

Insurer's website or app

Updated policy schedule, coverage dates and policy status

Primary source for confirming the issued policy

VAHAN (Parivahan Sewa)

Insurance validity recorded against the vehicle

Updates may not appear immediately

mParivahan

Vehicle insurance validity available in government records

Information depends on database updates

Note: Government portal records may take time to reflect a renewal. An outdated or missing entry does not automatically mean the renewal failed. However, it should not be treated as proof of active insurance either. Verify the policy directly with your insurer if the information does not match

Start with your insurer's official website or app and download the renewed policy schedule. For an additional check, visit the VAHAN portal, select the vehicle-details service and enter your registration number after completing the required verification steps. You can also check insurance validity through mParivahan. If the government records still display the previous expiry date, ask the insurer to verify the policy and its data submission status.

What to Verify on Your Renewed Car Insurance Policy

Spend two minutes on the document, because errors tend to surface only when you file a car insurance claim.

Confirm that the start date follows your old expiry without a gap, and that the registration, chassis and engine numbers match your RC. Then check that the IDV, any add-ons such as zero depreciation, and your No Claim Bonus percentage carried over. If the renewal happened after expiry, cover may begin only once the insurer approves an inspection, so the date on the schedule, not the payment date, decides when you are protected.

What to Do If Your Car Insurance Renewal Failed or Shows Pending

A pending status is fixable, but only if you act before the car goes out again.

Keep the payment reference number, bank confirmation and renewal acknowledgement, then contact your insurer or broker to trace the transaction. Ask whether the premium was received, whether the renewed policy has been issued and whether any further action is required. If the payment cannot be linked to a valid renewal, request clarification on the refund process. Treat the car as uninsured until the insurer confirms valid third-party coverage. Under the amended Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, driving without the required insurance can attract a penalty of three times the applicable base premium or Rs. 5,000, whichever is higher, for a first violation. For a subsequent violation, the penalty rises to five times the base premium or Rs. 10,000, whichever is higher.

The costlier loss is quieter. Most insurers forfeit your No Claim Bonus if a comprehensive policy stays lapsed beyond 90 days, and that discount can reach 50% of the own-damage premium. However, this 90-day window protects NCB eligibility, not insurance coverage, so an expired policy does not remain active during this period. And if your insurer does not resolve the missing policy or payment issue, raise a written complaint with its Grievance Redressal Officer and retain the acknowledgement. If the response is unsatisfactory or the complaint remains unresolved within the prescribed timeline, you can escalate it through IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal at https://bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in/. The portal lets you register and track insurance-related complaints using a reference number.

Summing Up

A debit alert and a green tick on the payment page prove very little. What confirms a car insurance renewal is a policy schedule with fresh dates, an active status in your insurer's app, and eventually the same expiry on VAHAN. Allow a few days for government portals to catch up, but do not let the wait drag, because cover depends on premium receipt and the printed start date. If anything looks off, chase the insurer the same day with your transaction ID and keep the car parked. Renew inside 90 days of expiry and your discount stays safe.

FAQs

Often a day or two, though it can stretch to a few weeks depending on the insurer's data upload. If it still shows the old expiry after a week, ask your insurer to confirm the policy was uploaded.

Yes, VAHAN and mParivahan work with the registration number alone, although VAHAN asks you to log in with your mobile number first.

Contact the insurer with the transaction ID. Since cover depends on premium receipt, assume you are uninsured until a schedule is issued or the amount is refunded.

Not always. Cover begins at the date and time on the schedule, and a policy renewed after expiry may wait for inspection approval.

Not if you renew a comprehensive policy within 90 days of expiry. Beyond that the accumulated discount is lost, though you should confirm the exact rule with your insurer.
